Dear members,

At our August meeting the executive discussed different options for future meeting formats. We considered several things, including: current covid numbers, members’ mixed feelings about meeting in person, distance members unable to meet in person and technology/manpower required to run satisfying hybrid meetings.

We came to the conclusion that the VMQG is an in person guild and that the sense of community we all love is diminished by running hybrid meetings. We propose that, beginning with September’s meeting, we will:

  • Meet monthly at the Unitarian Church.
  • Require that all who attend wear masks. This is not a BC PHO requirement but something we hope will increase members’ comfort levels in a space where we can’t distance. Masks will be available at the church if you need one.
  • Stream the meeting on Zoom so that those who don’t attend will be able to watch and listen to the meeting. Chat will not be monitored and Show and Tell will be live only.
  • Schedule in person sew-ins where there is room to be together while distancing.

Over the past two and one-half years our guild has learned to roll with the changes brought by Covid. We’ve had amazing speakers, workshops and fun challenges. Yet we miss the gathering together, the visiting and the sharing of our knowledge and creations. The executive team hopes that this plan gives us the chance to get back to doing the things that make our guild so special.

We will revisit this decision within the next few months and, as always, we will follow any new regulations that come from the Provincial Health Officer. With membership renewal coming up in October we felt it important that you know what direction the VMQG is taking.

Thank you for your time and your commitment to our guild. Please feel free to reach out with comments or questions.

On behalf of the Executive,
Megan Hanna

August 2022 Guild Meeting Reminder

Meeting Date: Monday, August 15th, 2022
Doors Open: 6:30PM for mixing
Meeting: 7:00PM - 9:00PM

Location:
Unitarian Church
949 West 49th Ave, Vancouver

The focus of the August meeting will be Showcase, Showcase, Showcase!! This will include the opportunity to drop off your quilts for the show, pick up your show tickets and buy raffle tickets.

Due to the nature of this meeting; members will be moving through different spaces within and outside of the church, the August meeting will be in-person only with no Zoom access.

There will not be a guest speaker and guild business will be minimal.

Ice Cream Social

To echo the theme of "gather" from Megan's letter, we wanted to crate a space and the opportunity to spend time together as a guild. To faciiliate this, we have planned an ice cream social!!!

We will be serving ice cream bars outside in the lovely courtyard of the church. There will be a varity of ice cream bars including vegan and non-dairy options.

August also feels like a great time for declutting so we will be having a Destash!!!

The August guild meeting will include 'Free Tables' for a Destash Bonanza!!!!

Bring in your good condition quilting cotton pieces and scraps sealed in Ziplock bags, patterns, books, tools or basically anything sewing related that you want to pass on to other quilters.

This is your chance to declutter and maybe pick up some fun stuff from others that sparks your creativity.

Also there are 28 of you who took part in Krista’s Threadplay pouch workshop who have not yet picked up your free small spool of thread.

There are also many needle giveaways from last years’ Fabricana presentation.

Please see Peg to pick these up!

Augut In Person - Show & Tell Reminder

For this meeing only if you would like to show a non-quilt quilted item please bring them along to show.

  • All quilts/projects shown must be quilted and finished.

  • We will be doing show and tell at the end of the meeting so we ask that you please don't show any Sowcase quitls. If you need to show a Showcase quilt because it's a WIP, we ask that you please show it at a meeting in the Fall.

  • If you would like your project to be included in the Show & Tell there will be a white board at the meeting to write your name on to indicate that you have a quilt to share.

  • During your presentation of the quilt please be sure to say your name and your instagram handle if you have one  (Please speak slowly as there is someone recording your information.)

    • Share a story about your quilt/project and explain why you think it's modern
    • Let us know if it's a WIP
    • Let us know if you don't want it shared on social media

REMINDER: Seaglass Quilts with Allie McCathren

Date: Saturday, October 22th, 2022
Location: Zoom

Allie allowed her passion for marine biology to seep in while creating this entrancing and relaxing piecing style. You will use your own fabrics to tell a story with colour or shape or randomness.

This is an excellent stash buster project, as it uses smaller pieces of fabric that do not have to match (but it does help if they are in the same color family). Allie will help with fabric selection and how to identify color families in this course. Most of the seaglass quilts she makes shift from blue to green, but the joy of these quilts is that you can make them using any colors you want. They’re also a great way to showcase those small pieces from special fabrics that you want to memorialize.
