This Week...

Help shape the future of the Country Club transit exchange, take a walk in the park and participate in Water to Earth Month. Read on for more!

Country Club Utility and Mobility Upgrades

Help shape the future of the Country Club transit exchange. The City is replacing aging underground utilities along Norwell Dr. To maximize the benefit of this construction, we are proposing surface improvements to the transit exchange. These include wider accessible sidewalks for queuing, improved bus shelters and furnishings, and street trees and lighting. Take a Walk in the Park Day

Today (March 30) is Take a Walk in a Park Day, a perfect opportunity to step outside and enjoy Nanaimo’s beautiful green spaces. To commemorate the event, we're introducing a new series featuring some of the city's most popular parks and walking locations. Over the next few months, we'll be providing ideas for picturesque walks, calm paths and favorite outdoor destinations on our social media channels. Whether you want to go for a short walk or a longer stroll, there is a Nanaimo park waiting to be discovered.

For dramatic coastal scenery, Neck Point Park delivers. Explore winding trails through Garry oak meadows, discover pebble beaches and take in stunning views of the Salish Sea. Popular with photographers, walkers and scuba divers, the park offers a true west coast experience. Every visit feels a little different, shaped by tides, weather and light — making it a favourite place to return to again and again.

Water to Earth Month

Beginning with World Water Day (March 22) and ending with Earth Day (April 22), Water to Earth Month celebrates water, the resource that is essential to all life and the Earth, the place we call home. The month is all about learning about and the steps we can take to protect and conserve our natural environment.

A number of events hosted by the City, RDN, Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region Research institute and Nanaimo and Area Land Trust are taking place during this month-long celebration.

Spring Tree Care

Tree pruning should be done in the winter months during full dormancy or after the trees have finished flowering.

Things you can do in the spring are:

  • Remove any remaining decorative lighting to avoid girdling the tree.
  • Clean up around the tree removing branches, twigs or leaves and then mulch the area around the base of the tree, but not against the trunk. Adding mulch against the trunk holds moisture and heat, which can help promote diseases such as canker.
  • Check the trunk and branches for damage before the leaves appear. Rabbits and deer can cause damage that may kill the tree. Protective mesh can help to protect against this type of damage.

If you see something that doesn't look quite right, contact a local Certified Arborist who can assist you.

SEASONAL TREE CARE

Tree Voucher Program

Did You Know? If you are a registered property owner in the City of Nanaimo, you can participate in our tree voucher program. This means you can purchase a tree to plant on your property for a reduced cost of $25 each.
