Spring 2021 Graduation Ceremony - Mark Your Calendars!

UBC will host a virtual graduation ceremony to celebrate the accomplishments of the Spring Class of 2021. All staff and faculty are invited to attend and support the graduating students at the convocation. The event will begin with a pre-show at 9:30am PST, with the actual ceremony start time at 10:00am PST, followed by an Alumni UBC virtual after-party.

Welcome Dr. Jan Hare, newly appointed Dean pro tem in the Faculty of Education

Dr. Hare is an Anishaabe scholar from the M’Chigeeng First Nation. She's currently the Associate Dean, Indigenous Education, and the Director of the Indigenous Teacher Education Program. She's also a Professor in the Dept of Language and Literary Education and holds a Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Indigenous Pedagogy. Dr. Hare will begin her new role on
July 1, 2021.

A Celebration and Tribute to  Dr. Blye Frank, Dean and Professor

The Faculty of Education invites faculty, emeriti, staff, students, alum, colleagues, and friends to celebrate ten years of the leadership of Dr. Blye Frank, Professor, and Dean. Welcome, Dr. Erica Bennett, Assistant Professor in Health, Culture, and Inclusion!

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Erica Bennett as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Bennett's program of research encompasses (in)activity and the aging body, the physical activity experiences of individuals living with chronic conditions and disabilities, and elite athlete stress, emotion, and coping. She also collaborates with members of the LGBTQ2S+ community, older adults, and the sports sector to design and deliver inclusive physical activity, health, and wellbeing programs. Please join the School of Kinesiology and Faculty of Education in welcoming Dr. Bennett into her new role, effective July 1, 2021.

Dr. Bill Sheel: Appointed Distinguished University Scholar

Dr. Bill Sheel has been appointed as a UBC Distinguished University Scholar for his innovative research examining the intersection of age, sex, and gender and the effects of exercise on human health. This appointment is made to a select group of ten exceptional University faculty who have distinguished themselves as scholars in research and/or teaching and learning. The designation is conferred by the President on the recommendation of a University adjudication panel. Congratulations Bill Sheel, on this outstanding career achievement!

Kick-off to the Summer 2021 Olympics in Tokyo!

National Women’s Rugby Sevens

KIN Associate Professor Maria Gallo was recently appointed the Assistant Coach for the National Women’s Rugby 7s team to help train the squad for the 2021 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. The team submitted a request to Rugby Canada that Maria come on board to coach them. She is highly respected as one of the few female rugby coaches in Canada and many of them had worked with her on the National Women’s 15s.

The School of Kinesiology Represented at the 2021 Olympics!

With the Tokyo Olympics scheduled to take place this summer in Japan, the School of Kinesiology expects to have significant on-site representation working with Athletics Canada (Canada’s Track & Field athletes). Dr. Trent Stellingwerff, Dr. Gareth Sandford, and Professor Michael Koehle will be travelling with the team as Lead of Sports Science & Sports Medicine, Physiologist, and Sports Medicine Physician. 

This work is part of a long collaboration between Drs. Stellingwerff and Koehle, who have co-supervised a number of graduate students and trainees through the School.

Strange Days: Adult Physical Activity and Mental Health in the First Two Months of the COVID-19 Pandemic

Congratulations to Guy Faulkner and KIN postdoctoral researchers Madelaine Gierc, Negin Riazi, Katie M. Di Sebastiano, Mahabhir Kandola, Carly S. Priebe, Katie A. Weatherson, and Kelly B. Wunderlich, who have published a paper investigating the associations between changes in MVPA (moderate to vigorous physical activity) and mental health (depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and life satisfaction) in adults impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

KIN Lecturer, Emma McCrudden Speaks on Nutrition, Sports and Ramadan

Emma McCrudden is a faculty member in the School of Kinesiology and is the sports dietician for the Whitecaps soccer team. Emma was recently featured on CBC regarding her work with Whitecaps rookie, Kamron Habibullah, who is currently fasting for Ramadan during team practice. In the interview, McCrudden speaks of her job keeping tabs on what Kamron can eat when he is permitted to break his fast, to ensure he is eating optimal foods for his calorie expenditure. Collaborative Catalyst Grant Opportunity in Kinesiology, Health, and Exercise Sciences

We are happy to announce a collaborative catalyst grant opportunity between UBCV and UBCO. The grants are intended to support innovative and original research initiatives that lead to novel, impactful scientific advancements, and successful external funding. The primary aim of these grants is to stimulate new and meaningful collaborations between investigators in the Schools of Kinesiology and Health and Exercise Sciences. Principal investigators must submit a brief letter of intent by 12pm PST on September 10, 2021. Final applications are due by 12pm PST on October 15, 2021. Contact mark.beauchamp@ubc.ca.

CSEP has released the ‘Get Active Questionnaire for Pregnancy’!

KIN professor Bill Sheel, Chair of CSEP, announces a new initiative, "Pre-Screen for Physical Activity in Pregnancy: Get Active Questionnaire for Pregnancy." The questionnaire is designed to identify the small number of individuals who should seek medical advice as a first step to becoming or continuing to be physically active during the months they are pregnant and to help the majority of healthy pregnant individuals overcome any concerns they might have with getting or staying active.

Kai Kaufman, Winner of 2021 Dean’s Award for Outstanding Service in the Emerging Leader

Congratulations go to Kai Kaufman, a Research Coordinator in Indigenous Studies in Kinesiology, within Indigenous Health and Physical Activity programming. Kai completed her undergraduate degree in Kinesiology, followed by her Master’s in 2017. She has since worked alongside Drs. Bredin, Warburton, and Miles providing leade ent with communities. Kai has a strong work ethic, is professional, dedicated, and gracious. She is a highly valued member and an integral part of the ISK team. To read more, click here.

The School of Kinesiology is saddened by the passing of alumnus, Harold Montgomery Engelson, BPE 1962 and three-time Thunderbirds Big Block winner in gymnastics. Anika is a fifth-year student graduating from the interdisciplinary stream and planning to start a Master's in Occupational Therapy at UBC.
