Hello & Welcome

We are officially in fall here in Vancouver, and with the weather changes there's also a higher demand of employment. Those seasonal summer jobs may be switching to seasonal winter jobs now. Look out while jobs increase towards the end of the year, including employment for seasonal holiday jobs. 

There's many programs to cover this month, and we're featuring many skills training sessions, keep reading to learn more!

Please note our centre will be closed on Thanksgiving Day Monday, October 13.

Skills Training Information Sessions

With a competative work environment as we have now in Vancouver, it's a good time to consider training or switching careers.WorkBC can provide funding for many programs, and we are providing many upcoming information sessions to share the details of how to access funding and options around skills training.

Meet the Employer: Vancouver School Board

Meet the Employer with the Vancouver School Board

Dates: Tuesday, October 21, 2025 1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.

We've brought the Vancouver School Board for our next "Meet the Employer" session. The team will be discussing roles as an Education Assistant, the hiring process, and benefits of working with the VSB.

Newcomer Women's Support Group

Kitsilano Neighbourhood House: Newcomer Women's Support Group

Dates: Wednesdays, October 1 - November 19, 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

In-person: Kitsilano Neighbourhood House 2305 W 7th Ave, Vancouver

Kitsilano Neighbourhood House is a big part of our neighbourhood, and we're excited to share they are hosting a new group. This is an 8 week multicultural support group for all women, trans or cis, as a welcoming inclusive space to connect.

Medical Laboratory Assistant Program

Medical Laboratory Assistant Diploma

Dates: Monday - Friday, October 20, 2025 - July 10, 2026 (full-time studies)

In-person: Cambria College - Surrey Campus

Self Rise Training Society and Cambria College are providing a fully-funded Medical Laboratory Assistant Diploma starting soon. This program provides a solid theoretical and practical foundation in the application of current medical lab theory, tools, processes, procedures, and practices.

Graduates of the Medical Laboratory Assistant program will gain the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in today’s healthcare environment.

Program topics covered:

  • Computer applications for managing and storing data
  • Work effectively as a healthcare team
  • Ethical practice
  • Patient confidentiality
  • Specimen collection and integrity
  • And much more!

Essential Work Skills for Newcomers Program

Essential Work Skills for Newcomers Program

Dates: Tuesday, October 14 - Monday, November 10, 2025

New to Canada, and don't have work experience here yet? This program was built with this experience in mind! The Essential Work Skills for Newcomers Program is a 4 week program providing participants with the skills to succeed in the Canadian workforce.

Program highlights:

  • Learn about Canadian workplace culture
  • Gain essential skills for success in Canada
  • Find out about community resources
  • Practice English reading, writing and speaking skills
  • Get tips to manage workplace communication challenges

Eligibility: 

  • WorkBC case-managed clients
  • Newcomers with limited or no Canadian work experience
  • English as an additional language, ability to participate in live workshop discussions in English
  • Available to attend program 2-3 hours per day (Monday-Friday) for four weeks (50.5 hours in total)
  • Access to a computer and stable internet, can use WorkBC resource room as needed

WorkBC LEADS Program

WorkBC Leads is starting soon!

In group workshops, various topics are covered to assist in preparing for, finding and maintaining employment, as well as health and safety.

Each pathway will bring you a step closer to enhancing wellness, increasing employability and strengthening confidence.

Program details:

  • 54 Program hours over 10 weeks 
  • Offered part-time and fully virtual
