Through the Lens: I Am Because You Are vs I Am Because You Are Not

Date: Feb. 10

Join Trophy Ewila & Lady Dia as they host a thought-provoking workshop that challenges our thought patterns and explores how to support antiracism and decolonoization initiatives. Through sharing their experiences of resistance and resilience, Trophy and Lady Dia will explore the concepts of white supremacy, capitalism, and patriarchy as current Western cultural norms.

Get a taste of student voices in action next time you grab a cup of locally sourced espresso from Comma or try a delicious new plant-based lunch option at Sunshine.

Plus, all UBCO students who complete the survey will be entered into a draw to win a $300 gift card or one of two $100 gift cards!

As everyone is officially settling into the spring semester, we are quickly approaching the Annual General Election for the UBCSUO Board of Directors. Becoming an elected student leader provides the opportunity for growth and development in the professional world, as well as a platform to give back to your peers at UBC. Gain valuable experience, practical skills, and personal development, all while working to better the student experience at UBCO.

The candidate nomination period begins Feb. 1 at 8 a.m. PT and ends on Feb. 12 at 4 p.m. PT.

Study with me: weekly group sessions

OLCs lead a new “Study With Me” program

The Student Learning Hub is offering student-led, Zoom group study sessions called “Study With Me”. If you are interested in creating dedicated study time in your schedule and connecting with others in your program or faculty, we encourage you to register.

Wednesdays 12:30 – 1:30 p.m., PT

Fridays 1 – 2 p.m., PT

During a “Study With Me” session, you will be invited to:

  • Log in to Zoom
  • Connect with your group and set goals for the session
  • Complete 25 minutes of uninterrupted study time followed by a break using the Pomodoro technique
  • Check in with your goals at the end of the session, connect, ask questions, stay and chat, or leave when you need to

FCCS Undergraduate Research Awards deadline Feb 16

FCCS Undergraduate Student Research Awards

The Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies is now accepting applications from undergraduate students to pursue innovative and original research as part of their learning experience. These awards provide undergraduate students support to engage in research and creation activities over the summer months.

There are two awards available for domestic students for $2,500 each, and one award available for international students for $9,000.

*Must be a BFA, BMS or BA student majoring in a program in FCCS.

Deadline to apply: Feb. 16.

Regardless of whether or not you plan to attend the June 2020 graduation ceremonies, you must apply to graduate before Feb. 28, 2020 in order to receive your degree. You will not receive your degree if you do not apply to graduate.

If you have questions about your degree requirements or would like to do a grad check, please contact Academic Advising.

Get free access to Microsoft 365 Office Applications

UBC students can now download Microsoft 365 Office applications from Microsoft’s portal.office.com at no cost.

To get Microsoft 365 applications from portal.office.com, sign up for an @student.ubc.ca email account. Once signed up, follow the steps listed on UBC IT’s Microsoft 365 for Students page.

What’s included in Microsoft’s portal.office.com:

  • Word
  • Excel
  • PowerPoint
  • Outlook
  • OneNote
  • Publisher (with Windows only)
  • Access (with Windows only)
  • Online access to Teams and OneDrive

The Office 365 subscription via UBC Software Portal will be no longer available from August, 1, 2021. Students are encouraged to create a Student email (cwl@student.ubc.ca) and opt-in for M365 service via MyCWL Account page in order to access MS Software.

Get ready for DIY wood signs! UBCO Recreation is sponsoring a wood painting event that will instruct participants via Zoom. The 4” x 16” wood sign kit includes everything you need to complete the project. You will learn how to apply stencil, paint and remove stencil, all with colours of your choice to create your wonderful personalized wood sign.
