Artist Highlight

Lighting a Path features artwork by seven Snuneymuxw creators, including the late W. Joel Good (ts'usqinuxun). Joel Good was a world-renowned Traditional Coast Salish master carver and artist whose influence continues to shine through the work of his family and community. A pivotal figure in the Coast Salish Art Revitalization Movement, Joel helped shape a powerful resurgence of cultural expression, leaving an impact that continues to grow long after his passing. Working alongside his father, the late Dr. William Good, his sisters Aunalee and Sophia, and his mother, Sandra Good, at Ay Lelum The Good House of Design, Joel contributed carvings, designs, and collaborations that appeared in major public art installations and on fashion stages - where tribute showcases continue to honour him today.

Call to Artists: 2027 Luminous Paths Festival

The City of Nanaimo is seeking proposals for temporary public art as part of the 2027 Luminous Paths festival! Temporary public art projects will be selected in the summer of 2026, with the festival taking place in February of 2027. Luminous Paths is Nanaimo’s biannual winter festival of light, art, land and community. The festival features temporary, light-based art installations that transform familiar places into immersive, placemaking experiences after dark. Luminous Paths invites artists to reimagine public space through illumination, projection, sound and interactive works that encourage curiosity, play and connection.

Installations are supported by opening and closing celebrations, live performances and community engagement activities, drawing residents and visitors outdoors during the winter months. Luminous Paths provides artists with an opportunity to present ambitious, highly visible work, engage broad audiences and contribute to a growing signature cultural event that celebrates creativity, community and light in the heart of winter.

Deadline: 11:59 pm Pacific Time, June 14, 2026

Pre-zoning Land for Social Housing

This is the final call to complete the City of Nanaimo’s survey on pre-zoning land for social housing, closing March 15. Social housing offers lower‑cost homes for people who need them. These projects often rely on government funding. The rezoning process can add time and expense, which may affect whether a project can move forward. Pre‑zoning removes this step for qualifying projects.

The City is proposing to pre-zone 2,022 parcels in our Urban Centre and Corridor areas. These parcels would be permitted more height and/or density only when social housing is included and conditions are met. You can review an interactive map, FAQs and details online.

Recycling 101

How’s your recycling knowledge? Did you know that cardboard boxes should be flattened and cut into pieces that are 2 ft by 2 ft (60 cm x 60 cm) before going into your blue cart? This will make space for more items in your cart and make it easier for all recyclables to get into the truck on collection day.

Learn more Recycling 101 tips on the Recycling page on the City website.
