Safety capsule: Loss of engine power and forced landing

The METAR at Mirabel Airport this morning, October 12 was as follows:

METAR CYMX 121300Z VRB02KT 25SM FEW080 BKN120 BKN240 06/04 A3011 RMK AC2AS4CI1 P202=

Beautiful morning for a pleasure flight, but beware the temperature is 6C and the dew point is 4C. A perfect recipe for severe carburetor icing, as shown in the following graph from Transport Canada document TP2228_38 .

This is what happened in this accident of October 9, 2003 in the vicinity of the Buttonville airport. The TSB concluded in their report ( TSB A03O0285 ) that:

  1. The temperature and dew point conditions present during the flight
most likely resulted in carburetor icing, which caused a loss of
    engine power.
  2. As the engine began to lose power, the pilot turned on
the carburetor heat, but noted that this resulted in an
even greater loss of power, and turned off the carburetor heat before
the hot air had time to melt the ice.

We invite you to consult TSB report A03O0285 for more information.

Change of frequency in La Tuque

A reminder that the ATF frequency at La Tuque airport has been changed to 122.325 MHz. This change has been in effect since July 14, 2022. Unfortunately, the follow-up carried out by La Tuque airport management shows that since July, 32 aircraft have entered the La Tuque area on the old frequency. Considering the level of activity in this sector, these 32 violations represented a certain danger to air safety.

The lesson to be learned: consult the CFS and do a good flight planning before taking to the skies.

Note: The VNC map has not been updated yet. Rely on the CFS, which has a regular update cycle (every 56 days), you will find the right information there.

ULM Festival in Saint-Cuthbert: a resounding success

Congratulations to Guillaume Narbonne and his entire team for this unifying event which attracted pilots at the controls of aircraft ranging from hot air balloons to ultralights, including gyrocopters and even the Antonov-2 biplane. The program even featured a demonstration by the Canadian Army Skyhawks. Aviateurs.Québec is proud to have been able to support such a gathering which provided the opportunity to make the world of general aviation better known to many visitors.
