The King Bulletin picture

December, 2024

Mayor's Message

Mayor Steve PellegriniOn behalf of King Township Council, welcome to December’s King Bulletin.

As we embrace the holiday season, I’d like to share some exciting updates and encourage everyone to celebrate the joy of giving and community this December.

Budget 2025: investing in King

On November 25 King Township Council approved our first service-based municipal budget for 2025. This innovative approach ensures transparency and reflects our commitment to delivering high-quality programs, services, and infrastructure while addressing challenges like inflation and rising costs.

This balanced approach allows us to maintain current service levels while investing in priorities aligned with the Corporate Strategic Plan (2023–2026).

Through the new service-based model, the budget organizes expenditures into six key service areas—Maintaining King, Serving King, Planning and Growing King, Governing King, Greening King, and Keeping King Safe—providing residents with a clear view of how their tax dollars are utilized.

Key highlights for 2025 include enhanced snow removal, road maintenance, expanded sustainability initiatives, and improvements to recreation and cultural programming. Thank you to everyone who participated in our public consultations and helped shape this budget. For more information, visit king.ca/budget.

Holiday events

The holidays are a time of celebrating and what better way to celebrate our community by attending King's two premiere upcoming holiday events. The first is a Main Street Christmas which will light up Schomberg on Saturday, Dec. 7 followed by the Nobleton Tree Lighting on Sunday, Dec. 8. These two events will be jam-packed with food, fun and festive cheer. I hope to see you there!

Trees of Giving: a holiday tradition with heart

The holiday spirit is shining brightly at the King Heritage and Cultural Centre with the return of our beloved Trees of Giving display! This magical exhibition features beautifully decorated trees by community groups and businesses. Visitors can cast their votes for their favourite tree, with all proceeds helping to send deserving children to camp in summer 2025.

Shop local this holiday season

As you check off your holiday shopping lists, I encourage you to explore the amazing local businesses right here in King. By shopping locally, you support our economy and strengthen the vibrant community we all cherish. Whether you’re looking for unique gifts, dining experiences or festive treats, our local businesses have something for everyone.

On behalf of King Township Council, I wish you a joyful holiday season filled with peace, warmth and community spirit. Let’s celebrate this special time together and continue to make King a wonderful place to live, work and thrive.

Please continue to volunteer and visit king.ca for the latest news on all things King.

Sincerely,

Mayor Steve Pellegrini

There’s snow place like King this winter: the Township has planned a fun lineup of recreation programs (including swim lessons!) for the coolest season of the year. Dabble in musical theatre, try cooking, coding, or cross stitching, take a dance class, join an ice hockey league, play sports or explore the wintry outdoors snowshoeing or cross-country skiing! The full listing of programs can be viewed in the new, interactive 2025 Winter Recreation Guide, now available online at king.ca/recreation. Registration for winter recreation programs—including P.A. Day programs and March Break camps—opens at 7 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 9. Aquatics are coming to the Zancor Centre!

Splish splash! Learn-to-swim lessons for all ages—based on the Life Saving Society Ontario’s Swim for Life program—will be offered at the Zancor Centre starting the week of January 27, 2025. Programming includes lessons for parent & tots, preschoolers, children, and adults, as well as private lessons for children ages three to 12. Aquatic leadership programs to train youth for employment as a swim instructor or lifeguard will also be available.

Starting Saturday, Jan. 4, 2025, the Township will offer 15-minute swim assessments at the Zancor Centre, where a swim instructor will guide children through a series of in-water skills and provide parents with recommendations on the most appropriate swim level to register their child, if they are unsure. Cost is $4 per assessment; pre-registration is required and opens at 7 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 9 at townshipofking.perfectmind.com.

Swim lesson descriptions and progression charts can be found in the  Winter Recreation Guide. For more information, visit king.ca/aquatics.
