LUMINOUS PATHS - Nanaimo's 150 and Beyond

Wednesday, Jan. 22 - Monday, Feb. 17

Opening Event: Jan. 22, 5 - 9pm | Maffeo Sutton Park

A FREE, immersive experience

Nanaimo Parks, Recreation and Culture is proud to announce the 2025 Luminous Paths: Nanaimo’s 150 & Beyond event, a FREE winter art festival that is a celebration of light, art, land, and community. Temporary light-based art installations will illuminate and transform the park’s public space into something new; an interactive experience that ignites imagination, inspiring hope and excitement for the future of our community.

Join Vancouver Island artists, David Martinello, Jenny Smith, Monkey C Interactive, bailey macabre and Mauro Dalla Costa in Maffeo Sutton Park as they transform urban space into new landscape through experiential art and light displays.

Luminous Paths will commence with an opening night event on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, from 5 - 9pm in Maffeo Sutton Park. Don't miss this opportunity to experience your community in a new way with performances by local musicians and roving LED entertainers, food trucks, interactive booths and activities, a display of commemorative Nanaimo 150 merchandise, and even an opportunity to tour the HMCS Nanaimo (on select dates)!

Art installations will be on display until Monday, February 17, 2025, when a closing event will take place in Maffeo Sutton Park from 4 - 8pm. To complement Family Day events, the festival's closing event will feature performances by child-friendly acts.

This event is funded (in part) by the Government of Canada, through the Canadian Heritage Building Communities through Arts and Heritage grant.

New Projects from the Urban Design Roster

A new mural is coming to the Bowen Park Complex!

Artist Anaïs Lera from the City's Urban Design Roster is completing a colourful mural in the lower Bowen Park Complex hallway during the first two weeks of January.

The mural's theme and design were developed with the help from the public who provided their feedback and thoughts on Bowen Park - from what they love most to different species of flora and fauna spotted in the park.

Anaïs is a French visual artist whose work sits at the intersection of illustration and design. She is interested in projects that centre around themes of nature and exploration, specializing in vibrant intricate ecosystems.

The Urban Design Roster offers artists and designers an opportunity to be involved in civic urban design and small-scale artwork related to city infrastructure.
