Boating Increasingly Popular on Brome Lake
At the end of August 2024, a team made up of the Town's environmental technician and Conservation Lac Brome employees surveyed the lake to carry out a new inventory of the boats moored at the docks. The last similar study was carried out in 2018.
It is important to note that the values observed in 2024 probably do not reflect the actual number of boats due to the storm on August 9, which caused the displacement or removal of several boats.
The exercise revealed several significant trends:
1. Increase in motorized boats:
The total number of motorized boats increased from 541 in 2018 to 668 in 2024, an increase of 23%.
2. Marked growth in personal watercraft and wakeboard boats:
Personal watercraft have doubled in six years (+37 units).
Wakeboard boats experienced the highest absolute increase, rising from 121 to 175 (+54 units, or an increase of 45%).
3. Stability of other types of motorized boats:
The number of pontoons and outboard motors (large, medium, small) remains relatively stable, with slight variations.
The number of water-skiing boats has decreased slightly.
4. Sharp increase in non-motorized boats:
Their number increased from 723 in 2018 to 913 in 2024, highlighting a growing interest in environmentally friendly recreational activities.
5. Decrease in the number of residences without a boat:
Only 90 properties had no boats in 2024, compared to 124 in 2018, confirming an upward trend in pleasure boating on the lake.
The evolution of the data shows an increase in the use of the lake, in particular by powerful craft such as wakeboards and personal watercraft, which could affect the water quality and accelerate the erosion of the banks. These trends will be integrated into the future management of the lake.
