Watch "Trick or Treaty?" during Treaties Recognition Week

Saturday, November 9 from 7-8:30pm
(L.E. Shore Library)

"Trick or Treaty?" is directed by Alanis Obomsawin, one of the most acclaimed Indigenous directors in the world. This film explores Treaty No. 9, a 1905 agreement between First Nations peoples in northern Ontario and the Crown. "Trick or Treaty?" is enlightening and entertaining, and powerfully portrays one community's attempts to enforce their treaty rights and protect their lands, while also revealing the complexities of contemporary treaty agreements. "Trick or Treaty?" made history as the first film by an Indigenous filmmaker to be part of the Masters section at TIFF when it screened there in 2014.

Treaties Recognition Week occurs from November 3 to 9 and honours the importance of treaties and helps students and residents understand the significance of treaty rights, treaty relationships and their relevance today. We are treaty people.

Donations accepted at the door. Popcorn and selection of drinks available for cash purchase.

Valuing the Blue Mountains Public Library

The Blue Mountains Public Library's social return on investment

On Monday, October 21 staff proudly presented its 2023 social return on investment to Town Council, in celebration of Ontario Public Library Week.

The study revealed that in 2023, for every $1 invested into Gallery, Library, Archive, and Museum (GLAM) services, your BMPL generates $2.54 of value or a value return of 254%.

The value report was calculated using the Ontario Library Service’s Valuing Ontario Libraries Toolkit (VOLT) and is an exercise taking place across the province.

Ken holding the Chronicles of Fairacre

Our guilty pleasure booklist

We asked library staff, what book do you enjoy but are kind of embarrassed to admit?

The Chronicles of Fairacre by Miss Read is an omnibus edition of her first three novels: Village School, Village Diary, and Storm in the Village. The narrator of all three stories is “Miss Read,” the schoolmistress of the tiny two-room primary school in the village of Fairacre. “Miss Read” is the penname of Dora Saint, who was a village schoolteacher in the 1930s and 40s in the English County of Middlesex, so one suspects that many of the stories are more or less true. The novels are comedies of manners, affectionate and witty portraits of English village life between the wars, with strongly drawn characters, and wonderful depictions of the natural world and the changing of the seasons. Miss Read is Jane Austen on a smaller scale. I suppose this is my guilty pleasure because life in Fairacre is the sort of world we would all like to live in but do not. The inhabitants of the village have their struggles but there are no irredeemable villains. Conflicts are resolved with fairness and compassion. If you enjoy the books of Lillian Beckwith, Jan Karon, James Herriot or Patrick Taylor, you will love Miss Read as well. - Ken
