August 2023 Newsletter

Hello members & comrades,

August is a month of remembrance, and taking action on behalf of people we love that have died from ineffective policies and an unregulated drug supply. CAPUD staff and Board express genuine condolences to our members and feel this pain deeply with you. The amount of collective grief within the drug using and Harm Reduction community is absolutely staggering #WeSeeYou

Our current research project (Overdose Anarchy: Guidelines for Grief and Burnout in Harm Reduction) is telling us that while the majority of our participants are currently experiencing overwhelming and dehabilitating grief, they are often the people arranging community memorials. We invite you to send us any information/promotion/graphics about events being organized by people who use drugs, we would like to amplify on CAPUD socials/communications and offer support if needed. Please submit to admin@capud.ca

You can find additional #IOAD2023 resources, events and the campaign toolkit here: https://www.overdoseday.com/ Thank you all for the love you give to International Oversose Awareness Day, in solidarity.

CAPUD continues to host a bi-weekly working group with PWUD employed in the construction industry and trades. Participants report the group has become a supportive, non-judgemental space to discuss substance use on the worksite. The Canadian Apprenticeship Forum course modules will be launched in early September. In addition to the collaborative content, we will also develop CAPUD one-pagers and infographics to share results of this project.

We welcomed Crackdown podcast to the trades group to highlight some members' experiences. Their crew did a fantastic job (as always) on Episode 40: Boys Don't Cry, please take time to listen.

Prisoners' Justice Day was observed on August 10, check out some CAPUD made graphics below. We encourage you to read up on the history of the day and about Eddie Nalon, who died in solitary confinement at Millhaven Prison in 1974.

Our organization now has a LinkTree! (@capudofficial) We will have upcoming webinar registrations, petitions, newletters and call outs to membership there so it can be easily located.

As always, reach out to us if you want to chat, have ideas, want to collaborate on a project or an interest in getting more involved with our work.

Take care of each other,

CAPUD Staff
