Tax Notices Are In The Mail

Property taxes are levied each year around mid-May and billed for the calendar year. Money raised from  property taxes is critical to funding local programs and services.

Tax rates are based on the funds needed to provide services for the year and are set to share the cost of providing the services.

Property tax payments are due on July 4, 2023. For ways to pay your property taxes, please visit the Payments page.

Home Owner Grant

The Home Owner Grant (HOG) reduces the amount of property tax you pay for your principal residence. This program is administered by the Province of BC.

To apply and to learn more, visit the Province's website.

Deferment

Tax deferment is a low interest loan program that helps qualified homeowners pay their annual property taxes on their principal residence. For more information and to apply, visit the Province's website.

Art Agora

The winners of May's En-light-ened Island will be announced on June 2. Last month's project was to make arrangements of candles and look into the flames for five minutes, then to reflect on the thoughts and emotions you experienced. In order to enter, participants had to capture their thoughts on a handwritten note and submit two photos; one of the note and one of the lit candles setting. Good luck to all the participants.

Public Works Week Success!

Thank you to everyone who participated in our Public Works Open House and to all of the Public Works employees who helped host such a fun and informative event!

On the morning of Wednesday, May 24, Public Works staff led hundreds of Grade 5 students through the yard for a tour and insight on how Public Works serves our community. Later, staff opened the doors for the adults and families as well. From the pipes that bring us our drinking water, to the busy mechanics bay, it was an opportunity to explore the innerworkings of Nanaimo's infrastructure. This year’s theme “Connecting the World through Public Works”, made for an educational and fun-filled adventure for staff and visitors alike!
