Did you miss Tuesday's Special Business Meeting?

At Tuesday’s Special Business Meeting, Council considered a budget amendment for 2023. This amendment is being recommended so the District can adapt to impacts as a result of cost escalations, project scope changes, supplier availability and emergency expenditure requirements that occurred in the first quarter of 2023. The amendment accounts for changes to projects inflight in 2023 only; further project changes to future years' projects will be incorporated into the 2024-2028 financial planning cycle.

The recommended budget amendment does not impact the 2023 tax revenue requirement.

HOWE SOUND SECONDARY NAMED WINNER OF SQUAMISH YOUTH COUNCIL'S BEAR'S DEN

The winning organization received $10,000 in funding while all finalists received $1,000 in micro-funding to put towards a new event, program or initiative that will positively impact Squamish youth as determined by the SYC.

Congratulations to the winner Howe Sound Secondary (Courtyard Connections Revitalization) and finalists OurSquamish (Youth Placemaking), Evan’s Lake Forest Education Centre (Outdoor Education for Everyone), SORCA (Squamish Nation Youth Mountain Bike Program), and Squamish Youth Services (Squamish Youth Artisan Maker Series and Market).

WEEKLY ORGANICS COLLECTION RESUMES NEXT WEEK

In 2022, 2.5 million plastic takeout cups ended up in the Squamish landfill. Many cafés and eateries in town offer discounts if you bring your own mug and will happily take clean containers to put your order in – just ask! Compostable and biodegradable cups and containers cannot go into your residential organics bin. While most can go into the recycling bin, using your own containers saves a significant amount of waste.

The Repair Café is BACK May 6 and we need volunteers!

Repair Cafés are free meeting places for repairing things (together). At the Repair Café you will find the expertise, tools and materials required to help you make many of the repairs you need. Volunteer fixers will be on hand to help and guide the repairs. You can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee or even lend a hand with someone else’s repair job.

Our volunteer fixers are the backbone of the program. Without them, the Repair Café would not be possible. If you sew, mend or fix small appliances, repair jewelry, small furniture, or toys and want to help out your community - we would love to hear from you! Please contact Laura at zerowaste@squamish.ca to lend a hand.
