This Week...

Pause to remember and honour those who fought for our freedom, explore our Poetry Trail and check out the Parks, Recreation and Culture November Giveaway. Read on for more!

Remembrance Day

Nanaimo's Remembrance Day ceremony will take place on Tuesday, November 11 at 10:50 am in the Dallas Square Cenotaph. The ceremony can be attended in person or viewed live from home on Rogers tv.

A parade will take place downtown prior to the ceremony along Front Street leading to the Dallas Square cenotaph and the following roads will be closed from 9 am to 1 pm:

  • Skinner Street,
  • Chapel Street,
  • Church Street, and
  • Front Street from Church to Chapel St

City offices and rec centres, with the exception of an Everyone Welcome swim from 1 to 5 pm at the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre, will be closed on November 11.

Poetry Trail

Have you walked the Poetry Trail yet? This collaboration with Poet Laureate Neil Surkan, is designed to spark reflection and creativity outdoors.

When you are meandering through Bing Kee Food Forest, the harbourfront or Queen Elizabeth promenade, you will see poetry trail stations featuring a  custom “viewfinder” that frames the surrounding landscape. A QR code on each station links to an online form where you can share your own poetic responses. Selected submissions will be curated and shared by the Poet Laureate.

City Receives Safety Award

On behalf of the City of Nanaimo, Sheldon Weatherby, Manager Occupational Health & Safety, proudly accepted the BC Municipal Safety Association’s 2025 Safety Improvement Award! This recognition celebrates our team’s leadership, dedication and hard work in creating a safer, healthier workplace — while helping injured employees recover and return to work. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to this achievement. Together, we’re building a culture of safety that truly makes a difference!

Social Club

Social Club is a gathering focused on fostering social connections and community spirit for individuals with diverse abilities. Attendees have the opportunity to participate in a variety of indoor and outdoor activities, including arts and crafts, collaborative games and enjoying the beauty of the community together. The club takes place Thursdays, 12 to 3 pm at Beban Park Social Centre, call 50-756-5200 for more information.

Help Prevent Flooding

Please make sure you are prepared and do your part to prevent flooding by clearing any catch basins, culverts, drains and ditches in front of your home.

Keeping catch basins clear allows rainfall to flow into the storm drains. You can help by using a shovel or a rake to keep catch basins on your street clear of debris.

If flooding occurs, call Public Works at 250-758-5222.
