Long-term Evacuation and Public Health Response

The National Collaborating Centres for Public Health (NCCPH) led a project to explore knowledge gaps and inform priorities for public health responses to long-term evacuations due to natural disasters. This included identifying issues related to the impact of natural disasters on First Nations communities. The long-term evacuees project led to the development of three knowledge products for public health professionals.

Health and Social Impacts of Long-term Evacuation Due to Natural Disasters in First Nations Communities: A Summary of Lessons for Public Health

This summary document describes the Long-Term Evacuees Project. It includes lessons learned from community-based research, as well as implications for public health responses to long-term evacuations due to natural disasters.

From the Floodwaters: Siksika Nation and the Bow River Flood Insights for Public Health Responses to Long-term Evacuation

This case study explores the evacuation of Siksika Nation following the Bow River flood in 2013. It includes insight into the health and social impacts of the evacuation and the role of public health to support long-term emergency planning and recovery.

Out of the Ashes: Ashcroft Indian Band and the Elephant Hill Wildfire Insights for Public Health Responses to Long-term Evacuation

This case study explores the evacuation of Ashcroft Indian Band following the Elephant Hill wildfire in 2017. It includes insight into the health and social impacts of the evacuation, as well as the role of public health to support long-term emergency planning and recovery.

Impact of Climate Change and Wild Weather on Mental and Physical Health, Lost Time From Work and the Need to Prepare

August 26 @ 12 - 1pm Pacific Time (PT)

This talk will quantify the longer-term toll on the mental and physical well-being that follows the aftermath of large scale extreme weather events like flooding and forest fire related loss. The discussion will end by highlighting practical and cost-effective actions that can be taken today, to avoid suffering tomorrow.

NCCMT Updated Registry of Methods and Tools for Evidence-Informed Decision Making page

In response to user feedback and consultation with knowledge translation specialists, the Registry now has curated resources, upgraded visuals and improved navigation and search functionality. These new features will support the growing focus on evidence-informed decision making in public health.


NCCIH Survey to identify the effects of COVID-19 on First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples’ access to services, including harm reduction and STBBI testing and care in Canada

In collaboration with PHAC, the NCCIH and NCCID are helping to support the implementation of a survey on how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the ability of First Nations, Inuit and Métis people to find and receive vital services for the care and prevention of HIV, hepatitis C, syphilis and other sexually-transmitted and blood-borne infections (STBBI), as well as drug treatment and harm reduction services.


McGill School of Information Studies survey: "COVID-19 misinformation spread and effect on older adults"

Researchers in the McGill School of Information Studies are recruiting participants for a current study entitled, “COVID-19 Misinformation Spread and Effect on Older Adults”. The study aims to understand how you have been using online resources (such as online search, social media, websites, etc.), to get COVID-19 information during this pandemic.


PFAS in water systems: Resources from the Walkerton Clean Water Centre (WCWC)

The WCWC has produced a new fact sheet and additional resources on perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in water.
