KUS Marks Kin's 75th Anniversary, with Student Community Initiatives!

To mark the School’s 75th Anniversary, the Kinesiology Undergraduate Society (KUS) is supporting undergraduate initiatives that embody the values of the School and that make a significant and positive impact on their communities. The four initiatives are the:

  • Active Aging Initiative (Lynda Li)

  • Sport4U Initiative (Jason Lin and Cameron Ardiel)

  • Women On Weights Initiative (Shannon Song and Arden Sauer)

  • Using 3D Technology to Enhance Physiotherapy for Kids Initiative (Wesley Lam)

Winners of the 2021 Canadian Kinesiology Alliance (CKA) Kin Case Competition!

Congratulations to Kin undergraduate students Jessica Yuen, Vanessa Meneghetti, and Christoph Hager for placing second at the 2021 CKA Kin Case Competition!

  • Jessica Yuen (right) - a fourth-year Kinesiology student in the Interdisciplinary stream
  • Vanessa Meneghetti (left) - a fourth-year Kinesiology student in the Health Science stream
  • Christoph Hager (middle) - a fourth-year Kinesiology student in the Interdisciplinary stream

Their presentation, entitled Cardiorespiratory Capacity, investigated the case of a 67-year-old patient with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), hypertension, diabetes, and who previously smoked. Their goal was to provide an exercise and nutrition intervention that could help her get back to doing physical activity.

Congratulations to the Fall Graduating Class of 2021

On November 24th, 2021, at 8:30 am, the faculty, staff, and students in the UBC School of Kinesiology were overjoyed to be able to celebrate the first in-person UBC graduation ceremony at the Chan Centre in almost 2 years since the start of the pandemic. President Ono presided over the congregation and delivered an emotional speech to the graduates. Dean pro tem of the Faculty of Education, Dr. Jan Hare, and Director of the School of Kinesiology, Dr. Robert Boushel, were present on stage as well to confer degrees to the graduating students.

A special thank you goes out to Angus Chan, BKin ’21, who gave an inspiring commencement address to fellow graduates. Angus also presented this year’s Graduating Class Gift to the university, a tradition that began in 1926.

Congratulations to all our new graduates, who have worked so hard and achieved much during a very challenging period.  Please join us in wishing each of them luck in the next chapter of their lives. Jasmine Gill graduated with a Master’s degree in Kinesiology (MKin). She took courses in both Performance Sciences and Clinical Kinesiology streams, focusing on the prevention and management of sports injuries and performance planning.

Jamie Hawke, MA Kin 2021

Jamie Hawke joined the UBC Class of 2021 this fall with her MA in Kinesiology. Her graduate research combines dance education and dance science by using interpretive methodologies to explore participant experiences. For her master’s thesis, she examined what dance educators experience when helping pre-professional ballet dancers develop their dance skills.

Staci Mannella, MSc Kin 2021

Staci Mannella graduated with her MSc in Kinesiology. Her master’s thesis is a socio-psychological study on high-performance, visually impaired athletes and their relationships with their sighted guides. Under the supervision of assistant professor Dr. Andrea Bundon, Staci “explores the intersections of disability sport cultures, experiences of impairments, and athlete mental health.”

Yanfei Guan, PhD Kin 2021

Congratulations to Dr. Yanfei Guan, who graduated with a doctorate.  His dissertation examines “the relationship between inter-limb asymmetry and sports injury in youth athletes.” Yanfei explains that he has a great interest in sports-related research: “My dissertation shows how injury prevention is important for athletes, especially for youth who are more vulnerable to soft tissue injuries.”

Passive stiffness changes in the lumbar spine following simulated automotive low speed rear-end collisions

Congratulations to Kayla Fewster and collaborators for having their study, "Passive stiffness changes in the lumbar spine following simulated automotive low speed rear-end collisions" published in Clinical Biomechanics.

Findings demonstrate that during a laboratory simulation of an 8 km/h rear-impact collision, young healthy adults did not develop low back pain. Changes in the low stiffness zone of the passive flexion/extension curves were observed following impact and persisted for 24 hours.

Does height-induced threat modulate shortening of reaction times induced by a loud stimulus in a lateral stepping and a wrist extension task?

Congratulations to UBC Kin professors Mark Carpenter and Tim Inglis for their study, "Does height-induced threat modulate shortening of reaction times induced by a loud stimulus in a lateral stepping and a wrist extension task?" Their study assesses how shortening reaction time impacts postural threat "by manipulating surface height during a postural (lateral step) task and a non-postural (wrist extension) task."

Two Job Opportunities

Two Student Resident Kinesiologist Positions Open
in the Change BC Program, Pacific Northwest Division of Family Practice

(Undergraduate Students - 3rd or 4th year)

The Pacific Northwest Division of Family Practice is looking for two upper-year undergraduate students to work as student/resident kinesiologists. Located in BC’s stunning Pacific Northwest region, these positions provide students an exciting opportunity to be part of an innovative program under development within Primary Care called CHANGE (Canadian Health Advanced by Nutrition and Graded Exercise BC). CHANGE BC is a Family Physician-led model that provides customized supports for patients with metabolic syndrome /type 2 diabetes together with Kinesiologists and Registered Dietitians.

Student/Resident Kinesiologists will be working with Family Physicians supporting patients with exercise prescriptions in person and virtually in Pacific Northern BC communities, such as Haida Gwaii, Smithers, Prince Rupert, Nisga’a Valley, Terrace, Kitsumkalum, or Houston. Students will have excellent opportunities to help with the introduction and strengthening of Kinesiologists as cornerstone, interprofessional, primary care team members working closely with Family Physicians, and will be a highly valued local support for patients.

Hours will vary according to patient and clinic schedules, but they will likely include occasional evenings and /or weekends.

Canada Scores Vancouver is a non-profit organization that aims to inspire urban youth to be engaged students, lead healthy lives, and have the confidence to make a difference in the world.

Research Opportunity: Health Talks Student Contest

The BC Patient Safety & Quality Council is looking for an individual or team of students (max. 3 people) to share their hopes for health care as part of their annual Health Talks event at Quality Forum 2022! Using the PechaKucha format, eight speakers will take the stage to represent a range of professions and perspectives about their hopes in health care, while displaying 20 photos for 20 seconds each.
