A ransomware gang, Vice Society (or “Vice Spider”) has been affiliated with recent high-profile, academic focused cyber-attacks. Attacks have caused restricted access to networks and data, delayed exams, canceled school days, and theft of student and employee details. Please stay vigilant and refresh THESE TIPS to avoid phishing scams.

Data Retention for Videos

In October 2023, UBC will implement an automated one-year retention policy for Zoom & Teams video recordings. This data retention schedule will affect all faculty, staff and student employees at both UBC Vancouver and UBC Okanagan campuses. Systems such as MS Teams and Zoom are not intended for long-term video storage. New device for Christmas?

Make sure it's associated with your CWL to avoid issues with multi-factor authentication (Duo).

  • Navigate to https://mfadevices.id.ubc.ca Authenticate to confirm your identity

  • Click on "+ Add another device"

  • Select the type of device that you wish to add to your account & follow the prompts

Make sure you have more than one option registered for your Enhanced CWL account to have a backup method enrolled just in case.

Starting next month, IT will offer monthly drop-in, online sessions on common technology related topics such as using Teams & OneDrive, where to store files, how to find and install UBC software and other topics.

Payroll Phishing Attacks

    • UBC Advanced Research Computing (ARC) and UBCO Research Computing (RC) are offering a two day, in-person hands-on workshop on RONIN – AWS Cloud Computing. Due to the hands-on nature of the workshop, this workshop is not offered virtually. The workshop is FREE and open to faculty, staff and students. Registration is limited to 25 people.
