Dear residents of Cole Harbour-Dartmouth,

We all know the ageless saying 'April showers bring May flowers' which I'm sure originated from the need for rain to yield nature's growth. Of late, though, April showers have been more like heavy rainfall and have been presenting some environmental concerns for our water courses and lakes.

I have been working with community members, elected officials, and provincial departments to address concerns expressed about the impact from sedimentation erosion control from neighbouring development projects impacting Russell Lake and Morris Lake at this time.

I will continue to work with all parties involved to ensure our lakes are not negatively impacted by day to day exercises.

I truly appreciate those who contact me and my office on a variety of concerns important to you because I truly share and, in some cases, I personally have a shared or similar experience especially on matters related to healthcare. Sadly, there are too many without family doctors including entire members of young families. It is difficult to know just how many are impacted by not having a personal physician because that data is no longer available for public consumption. If you wish to discuss this matter further with me, please feel free to contact me and my office.

In advocacy,

Russell Lake Concerns

I was contacted by a concerned resident on sedimentation flowing into Russell Lake during rain events (see photo).

Since then, I have been working with staff from NS Department of Public Works, NS Department of Environment and NS Department of Fisheries & Oceans who visited the site at the Hamlet Lane development project where the sedimentation issue was originating. The developer has hired a consultant to remediate the issue and are looking at additional controls such as pumps and a filtration system using hay and fabric. Hopefully this will resolve the issue, but I’m assured monitoring will continue.

Thank you to all for providing me with updates and photos which I shared with those involved and receipt of same was appreciated.

Feel free to contact my office by email at any time at info@loreleinicollmla.ca or by phone at 902-701-2245 on this and any area of concern.
