UBC Affiliated Fellowships – Doctoral competition

The UBC Affiliated Fellowships doctoral competition runs in concert with the university-adjudicated Tri-Agency Canada Graduate Scholarships-Doctoral (CGS-D) competition. Students who submit an NSERC, SSHRC, or CIHR doctoral award application are eligible for “unrestricted” Affiliated Fellowships and do not need to submit a separate Affiliated Fellowships application. To be considered for “criteria-based” affiliated fellowship(s), students must submit this checklist to their graduate program by the application deadline.

Those applying only for the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship must submit a separate and complete Affiliated Fellowships application in order to be considered for the Affiliated.

Affiliated Fellowship competition information and application/reference forms are available at: https://www.grad.ubc.ca/awards/affiliated-fellowships-doctoral-program.

UBC Deadlines for the Tri-Agency CGSD / Affiliated Fellowships Doctoral Competitions

  • Applicant deadline: 12:00 PM (noon) PDT on Tuesday, 14 September 2021
  • Graduate program nomination deadline: 4:00 PM PDT on Friday, 8 October 2021

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) program is designed to attract and retain world-class doctoral students by supporting students who demonstrate both leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies in the social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and engineering, and health-related fields. Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada, and international students are eligible to be nominated for a Vanier Scholarship, which is valued at $50,000 per year for up to three years.

The application is completed online on ResearchNet: https://www.researchnet-recherchenet.ca/rnr16/LoginServlet

UBC Vanier application deadline: 12 noon (PDT - Vancouver time) on Thursday, 2 September 2021
Graduate program nomination deadline: 4:00 pm PDT on Tuesday, 21 September 2021.

Note:

  • Given the continuing challenges related to COVID-19 and the difficulty of obtaining/processing paper transcripts, it is recommended that applicants order official transcripts that can be sent electronically from their previous institutions to UBC, rather than by mail, where possible.
  • Vanier CGS requires official transcripts - unofficial transcripts are not accepted for non-UBC transcripts. For details on transcript requirements, applicants are recommended to review our Vanier webpage (section ' Application Procedures').

For more information, including eligibility requirements, application procedures, and nomination procedures, please visit our Vanier webpage: https://www.grad.ubc.ca/awards/vanier-scholarship.

Important note on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion: The Vanier CGS program encourages equity, diversity and inclusion, as part of the Tri-Agency’s broader commitment to excellence in research and research training in Canada. Resources for applicants, institutions, referees and the selection committees are available at: http://www.vanier.gc.ca/en/equity_diversity_inclusion-equite_diversite_inclusion.html. Applicants are encouraged to review the resources before they begin writing their application.

UBC GRADUATE STUDENT WELLBEING AMBASSADOR PROGRAM: Applications now open!

Graduate school can be an exciting and challenging time. Some students may experience wellbeing challenges, including managing stress, navigating support, finding time for self-care (e.g. sleep, exercise, nutrition) and balancing personal and academic responsibilities. Peer support can be an important tool in helping students thrive academically, socially and emotionally. That’s where the UBC Graduate Student Wellbeing Ambassador program comes in!

The Graduate Student Wellbeing Ambassador (GSWA) program brings UBC Vancouver graduate students together to build knowledge and capacity for health and wellness peer support. Through the GSWA program, Graduate Student Wellbeing Ambassadors work with the Health Promotion & Education Unit and university collaborators to support and promote Graduate student health and wellbeing.

THE PROGRAM AIMS TO:

  • Develop the capacity of graduate students to offer peer support to improve graduate student health and wellbeing.
  • Support graduate students to be aware of and effectively use and share health and wellbeing resources.
  • Facilitate conversations and knowledge-sharing opportunities related to enhancing graduate student health and wellbeing across campus.
  • Build connections across graduate programs to share and develop peer wellbeing support practices.

Information about responsibilities, time commitment, training & professional development, and more available at https://wellbeing.ubc.ca/wellbeing-campaigns-and-initiatives/wellbeing-champions-programs

To mark the 25th and 40th anniversaries of the SBN and SCWIST, we have partnered with the Discovery Foundation to launch a new Business Mentorship Program. This is a 1-week intensive program running from September 27th - October 1st 2021. Schedule is available on our website.

Aligned with Global Biotechnology Week, the Discovery Foundation’s Business Mentorship Program aims to support the next generation of Biotechnology Entrepreneurs, especially those from historically underrepresented communities (BIPOC, Women, LGBTQIAS+, and more) in navigating the Biotechnology industry.
Why be a Mentee?
  • Understand the process of establishing a start-up company in the Biotechnology Industry from incorporating a business, developing a business strategy to IPO’s or acquisitions
  • Develop a business plan and business model under the guidance of a mentor
  • Develop an understanding of start-up company fundraising, how to conduct market assessments, and determining company valuation
  • Gain a basic understanding of intellectual property and licensing
  • Develop an understanding of the role racial and gender inequality plays in the workplace and the actionable items we can take towards mitigating bias
The program aims to foster relationships between individuals and professionals through networking and mentorship, providing education and training through workshops and seminars, and providing 1:1 consultation with industry leaders. Participants will be paired with mentors throughout the week and have the opportunity to participate in a pitch competition which will provide a cash award and in-kind prizes to the top three participants to kick-start their Biotechnology venture.

This program is limited to 10 participants. Selected applicants will be contacted via email within 2 weeks of the application deadline.
Applications will close on September 03rd. Click here to go directly to the application form.
