UBCO Life is a newsletter delivered twice per month to continuing undergraduate students, featuring academic and social events, upcoming deadlines, university news, and other issues relevant to student life and success at UBC Okanagan.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

On September 30, we invite you to join us in wearing orange in recognition of all of the children who attended residential schools, honouring survivors, and remembering those that did not return home. Consider attending a local event, donating to survivors’ support and initiatives, helping to spread awareness, and taking some time for personal reflection and “walking your learning forward”.

The University will be closed on October 2 in observance of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Bring the Heat to Homecoming this weekend

This weekend is Homecoming! On Friday night, men’s soccer gets the action underway at 5 pm against Mount Royal followed by women’s soccer against Calgary at 7:30 pm.

  • The first 200 students that come to the soccer games will get free pizza and a drink.
  • During halftime at both Friday night games, we will pick students and alumni in the crowd to participate in a game of bubble soccer.

Come early to ensure your spot and get a chance to win a $500 gift card to the UBC Bookstore and be sure to wear your Heat blue and gold!

Free in-person food skills workshops continue! Join us on September 26 and 28 as we make Mediterranean bowls and on October 3 and 5, we’ll make shakshouka! Registration is required, and limited spots are available.

Do midterms have you feeling stressed?

We can help with that! Set yourself up for success with Exam Jam: Midterm Motivation. Happening on October 5, sessions will include:

  • Exam reviews
  • Study groups
  • Drop-in tutoring
  • Wellness breaks
  • Exam prep, such as time management, study planning, or tips for writing essay exams

Looking for spaces to hang out on campus? Explore the collegia

UBCO’s collegia spaces are designated spots for students who don’t live on campus to hang out, study, work on group projects, or recharge. Each collegium is furnished with a relaxing, lounge-style atmosphere with sofas, a fireplace, board games, and study space. Find your community by visiting a collegium during your next break.

Looking to attend a conference or student competition but don’t have the funds?

UBCO offers financial support to students looking to attend a conference, bring a new initiative to campus, or attend a student competition. Depending on the type of funding you’re seeking, you could be eligible to receive up to $3500!

Sounds great, right? It can be overwhelming to know where to start. There’s a Tuum Est Student Initiative Fund Program Assistant available to answer questions and provide support when completing your application. Next month’s deadline is Monday, October 16.

Meal Share Program accepting applications

Are you a UBC student who finds yourself making the tough choice between paying bills and buying food? Students experiencing food insecurity can apply for non-repayable funds to access food through the UBC Meal Share Program. Funds are available on a first-come, first-served basis until the monthly limit has been reached.

Produce your media with the UBC Studios Commons Service Hub

Got a project where a video would be better than a paper? Want to try a podcast? UBC Studios Okanagan is back for another year! Students can borrow equipment and use UBC Studio spaces for their UBC-related projects at no cost.

Some of the equipment you can borrow includes cameras, microphones, lights, and portable podcasting gear. Equipment can be booked through the UBC Studios website for up to two business days and can be picked up Tuesday through Friday from 9 am to 4 pm.

To support a healthy and effective learning environment, Campus Operations and Risk Management has installed 50 free menstrual dispensers in multi-stall washrooms across campus offering free menstrual products.

Student volunteers needed at Picnic

The Wellness Hub in Picnic is looking for student volunteers! Join Campus Wellness & Education as we encourage the wellbeing of our campus community. We value food and its ability to foster community and support wellbeing. Contribute to a welcoming, inclusive space by helping with basic upkeeping of the space, welcoming guests, and learning about the resources available to support student’s wellbeing.

Flexible shifts at a minimum of two hours are available Monday to Friday between 8 am and 4 pm. Reference letters are easily provided!

Volunteer opportunity: Let’s Talk Science

Let’s Talk Science is an award-winning, national, charitable organization that promotes science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) learning in kindergarten to grade 12 students. We create unique learning programs while delivering free hands-on activities with the help of university student volunteers.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to:

Visit classrooms and community groups to facilitate hands-on science activities

  • Travel to rural and Indigenous communities
  • Develop teaching, communication, and leadership skills
  • Network and collaborate with like-minded people throughout the country, both as students and professionals

Help train future doctors for our communities

The Southern Medical Program is recruiting participants from all ages and backgrounds to help train future doctors for our communities. Volunteer patients allow medical students to gain confidence and competence by practicing communication and clinical skills in a realistic setting, under the guidance of a doctor. Standardized patients are healthy individuals trained to portray their personal history, physical symptoms, and emotional characteristics for the purpose of testing or teaching specific clinical skills.

Both volunteer and paid positions are available. Sessions are primarily held at the Clinical Academic Campus at Kelowna General Hospital.

Join us on October 5 for an online session where you will learn about the Bachelor of Education (BEd) French Pathways program.

Salsa and Bachata

Join Recreation for five weeks of Salsa and Bachata Lessons with Carlos! Lessons will be happening every Thursday night starting September 21 until October 19.

No experience is necessary to take the Level 1 class from 7 to 8 pm! If you have taken a Level 1 class, you can sign up for Level 2 from 8:10 to 9:10 pm.

Share your thoughts: How do you learn with video?

UBC is looking for students to share their needs, insights, and experiences with university video tools via a survey, open now until October 4.

You’ll have a chance to provide your input on lecture capture, storing and editing recordings, and using video as a part of assignments, assessments, and more.

The survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete, and responses are completely anonymous.
