We invite you to Dr. Andrew Shih’s presentation "Improving the System from Vein-to-Vein: Transfusion Medicine as a Model for Quality Research and Education"

The presentation will be held on May 26th from 10 am to 10:30 am with time for questions and discussion following.

Please be sure to refer to our website at http://grad.pathology.ubc.ca/ when you have questions or need guidance.

The Pathology Day organizers are welcoming graduate students to act as chairs for the oral sessions at Pathology Day on May 28th. There will be one graduate student chair for each of the three oral sessions. Graduate student chairs will be responsible for opening the oral session, introducing the speakers, moderating the question period, and closing the session on time. Acting as a session chair for a meeting is something that can be put on your CV as academic involvement.

If you are interested in volunteering to be a chair for any of the oral sessions, please contact me at rcederberg@bccrc.ca. I will contact the first three volunteers to confirm which session they will chair. If you are presenting at pathology day you will still be eligible to be a chair for one of the other two oral sessions.

Thank you!
Rachel Cederberg,
Pathology Day Organizing Committee

Information on processing times
On April 27, the IRCC announced that their anticipated processing time for all study permit applications outside of Canada is 12 weeks, and that students who submit a complete application by May 15, 2021 will receive a decision by August 6, 2021.

Three days later, an announcement was sent to international students who have accepted their offer of admissions for 21W T1 start.

Note: G+PS is currently considering sending a brief follow-up survey to help us understand where each of our admitted students is in the study permit application process.

Updates from G+PS
Study permit applications for Indian students
Last Thursday, May 13, G+PS sent the attached message to Indian graduate students with conditional admission offers who are starting their program in 2021 WT1, as UBC had received information that incoming students with conditional offers may not have their study permit applications approved.

Awards Competitions:

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine has opened our annual four-year fellowships (4YF) competition to both: a) a current first or second year PhD student; and b) a PhD student starting their program in September. Students who are interested in applying for a 4YF should review the eligibility criteria and application requirements below.

Applications are due by e-mail to Heather Cheadle (heather.cheadle@pathology.ubc.ca) by Friday, June 25th, 2021 at 4:00PM. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

Eligibility:

The competition is open to Pathology graduate students irrespective of citizenship or residency status in Canada.

Students that have received major peer-reviewed scholarships (e.g., Canada Graduate Scholarship-Doctoral awards, Vanier scholarships, etc) are automatically 4YF recipients and are NOT eligible for this competition.

Current students must have completed their annual supervisory committee meeting by June 14th and a complete supervisory committee progress report must be on file in the Department. If you have not yet completed your meeting this year and you wish to apply for a 4YF before the due date, please include your completed and approved supervisory committee progress report with your application and indicate the date you have scheduled your meeting.

Students that directly entered the PhD program are eligible to apply for a 4YF within the first two years of starting graduate studies. Students that entered the MSc program and have transferred to the PhD program are eligible to apply for a 4YF within one year of transferring to the PhD program provided they are within two years of starting graduate studies. For example, students that are eligible for this competition are:

1.) Students that directly entered the PhD program between September 2019 and September 2021.

2.) Students that entered the MSc program in September 2019 or later AND transferred to the PhD program between September 2020 and September 2021 (students with PhD transfers that are currently in progress are eligible).

If you have any questions about your eligibility, please contact Heather Cheadle and Chun Seow (chun.seow@hli.ubc.ca) for clarification.

How to apply:

Your completed application must follow the formatting guidelines for the CIHR Canada Graduate Scholarship-Doctoral awards. As outlined in the attached document, a complete application includes:

1) A pdf draft version of your Common CV formatted for the CIHR Canada Graduate Scholarship-Doctoral award competition. See the attached document for details.

2) A one page project summary.

3) Up to 1/2 page describing any special or extenuating circumstances that may have adversely affected your academic performance and/or your scientific productivity (optional)

4) A confidential, 2 page recommendation letter from your current research supervisor sent directly to Heather Cheadle.

Note, students do not need to submit transcripts for this competition. The Department will utilize transcripts that are currently on file for each student (collected during the admissions process) and graduate school grades obtained through the UBC student information system.

Applications will be adjudicated by a Departmental Awards Committee, and the results of this competition will be announced by August 16th, 2021.

Detailed application instructions can be found here.
