Drop, Cover and Hold

An earthquake could happen at any time, and in fact, there are thousands of minor earthquakes in BC every year. Are you ready for the big one? You may only have seconds to react before strong shaking knocks you down and things around you begin to fall.

Practice makes perfect, or in this case, practice creates instinct! On Oct. 20 at 10:20 am, drop, cover and hold. Listen for the drill on our local radio stations, 102.3 FM The Wave or 106.9 FM The Wolf. Register to participate at www.shakeoutbc.ca

GREAT BC SHAKEOUT

Have you downloaded the Voyent Alert! app or registered for emergency notifications yet? On Tuesday, Oct. 25, the City of Nanaimo will be testing our emergency alert system. Register ahead of time and see how your alerts and notifications will come through in a large-scale emergency such as an earthquake.

Go to www.nanaimo.ca/goto/alerts to register for email, voice (phone call) or text-based alerts, and to learn more about the Voyent Alert! app, and stay tuned next week for more!

EMERGENCY ALERTS

The Drought Continues

It's no secret - it's been warm and dry out, and it feels like forever since we've had a good rainfall. The City of Nanaimo is still following Stage 2 watering restrictions: even-numbered houses can water on even-numbered days, and odd-numbered on odd-numbered days. More details about the restrictions can be found at www.teamwatersmart.ca

Also with the extremely dry conditions, Nanaimo Fire Rescue has placed a temporary hold on issuing Special Event Burning Permits and Fireworks Permits for Halloween and Guy Fawkes day. Please remember, the sale, possession and use of fireworks is banned in the City of Nanaimo without a valid permit.
