Candida auris designated as a disease of public health significance (DOPHS)

Effective Jan. 1, 2025, Candida auris (C. auris) is designated as a Disease of Public Health Significance. Candida auris is a highly transmissible fungal pathogen that can infect any part of the body and can cause invasive disease with high mortality rates. While the current prevalence of C. auris in Ontario is low, it is a significant public health threat due to its ability to cause outbreaks in health-care settings and its resistance to multiple classes of antifungal medications.

When C. auris is identified, public health staff will follow up to complete a case investigation. Health-care providers are asked to report cases of C. auris using the online DOPHS reporting form, or the corresponding PDF form by the end of the business day after receiving the result.

The Infectious and Communicable Disease program can be reached at 613-966-5500, ext. 349 with additional questions and concerns.
