Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) - now being offered at White Rock location!

Dr. Karen Parmar and Dr. Alyssa Fruson have been offering IUI treatments, in our Fort Langley location, for the past 10 years. As of September, Dr. Fruson is also working out of the White Rock location, and the fertility department will be expanding to offer IUI treatments in both locations!

The rationale behind IUI is to increase the number of normal motile sperm, that are morphologically normal, in the uterus, closer to the site of fertilization. IUIs are usually prescribed in rounds of 3 consecutive cycles. Research supports the effectiveness up to 6 cycles, when compared to natural timed intercourse.

Indications of IUI

-male sub fertility

-absence of fertile cervical mucous

-ovulatory dysfunction

-unexplained infertility

-mild endometriosis

From the Cancer Care Center

Hello all, here are a few updated from the IHC CCC this September.

First, I am happy to be back to clinic after a summer sabbatical. A huge thanks to the IHC team for taking such good care of my patients in my absence! The first week back has been great, I certainly missed the team and my patients.

Second, September marks the beginning of Dr. Soles’ move to Vancouver Island with her lovely family, and her transition to a largely remote practice. We are thrilled that Dr. Soles remains an integral part of the IHC family. We wish her the very best in this new and exciting chapter.

Third, I am pleased to announce that during the sabbatical I was able to complete the long awaited Advanced Integrative Palliative Care Course, and its accompanying text called The Algorithm Book. You can find information on this course @ https://integrativeoncologyinstitute.ca. Many years in the making, this represents collaboration amongst leading naturopathic, medical and radiation oncologists, our very own palliative care doctor Kevin Sclater, MD, and resident Dr. Sarah Denotter, ND. Our patients can take comfort knowing our group is developing and leading integrative oncology providers worldwide on the best practices in managing patients with serious illness.

Fourth, a few updates on upcoming conferences that I will be attending:

- October 6/7 I will be attending The Dermoscopy Academy in Manhattan, New York (https://thedermoscopyacademy.com/). This premier event gathers top dermoscopy experts from across the Americas for an intensive two-day course aimed at enhancing expertise in dermoscopy, dermoscopic diagnostic criteria, advancements in optical filters, correlations with histopathology, and more. This is exciting for our patients as Total Body Skin Mapping will soon be offered at IHC! Perhaps the most exciting thing about this, is that this incredible skin cancer screening tool will be a only a part of our upcoming Cancer Screening Program that will be unlike any screening program currently available.

- Next, I will be attending the McGill International Palliative Care Congress, along with our very own Dr. Kevin Sclater and Mark Elderfield. The three of us are looking forward to a week in Montreal, with the world’s best palliative care minds. We are also very excited to have been selected for a poster presentation on our Integrative Palliative care model, with the best of naturopathic and conventional medicine intersecting to provide the best quality and comprehensive palliative care for our patients with serious illness, including metastatic cancers, as well as advanced heart, liver, lung, kidney, and autoimmune diseases (amongst other serious chronic illnesses).

- Lastly, in late October I will proudly deliver an Oral Presentation titled Integrative Naturopathic Treatment Model for Colorectal Cancer: A Retrospective Study, at the 21st annual Society of Integrative Oncology conference at the City of Hope Hospital in Costa Mesa, California. This is the first IHC CCC study that has been completed and is now ready for dissemination. We have submitted this same paper for publication to the Journal of Clinical Oncology, but no matter what, we will get this published.

Between the IHC research department’s recent advancements, the upcoming launch of our new and exciting cancer screening program including the skin cancer diagnostic equipment, and our uniquely holistic integrative palliative care programs – I have never been more excited about what we are doing at the IHC CCC. All of this is in addition to our longstanding and incredible team of NDs, nurses, MD, acupuncturist, support and administrative staff.

Sincerely yours,

Gurdev Parmar, ND, FABNO(USA)

The Role of Vitamin D in Cancer Prevention: What You Need to Know

Vitamin D, often called the "sunshine vitamin," is crucial for many bodily functions, including bone health, immune function, and mood regulation. In addition, vitamin D might also play a significant role in cancer prevention. Emerging research suggests that maintaining adequate levels of vitamin D could help reduce the risk of developing certain cancers and reduce the risk of cancer recurrence.

In The News

Pain medication finally recommended in U.S. for IUD use. What about Canada? - National | Globalnews.ca

Newly released guidance in the United States is now recommending pain management for the insertion of an intrauterine device or IUD, which can be an unpleasant experience for some women.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated their guidance saying that lidocaine, which is a local anesthetic agent, is useful in reducing patient pain for IUD placement.

It's "way too common" for patients not to get any pain management while undergoing the procedure, Dr. Joss Reimer, the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority's chief medical officer, said in a 2023 interview with CBC Manitoba's Information Radio.

"It's a long-standing practice where we just don't value the pain of women the same way we do men, and expect them to go through painful procedures that we wouldn't expect in other circumstances."

The Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Canada (SOGC), stated that they understand that some patients may need more pain management, but making that a standard of care would limit patient access, as all practioners aren’t able to offer that in their clinical setting.

All IUD insertions done at IHC, are performed with use of local anesthetic. We have been offering pain management solutions for this procedure for the past decade. We are thrilled that the US is acknowledging the need for pain management, and hope that Canada will soon follow suit.

Doctor Favourite Receipes

Braised Greens with Coconut Kale

With fall around the corner the gardens and grocery stores are now full of a variety of local leafy greens making it an opportune time to incorporate these delicious foods into your cooking! Here is one of my favourite kale recipes that even my children adore which I found many years ago from Cooks Illustrated.

Ingredients

3 tablespoons olive oil

1 medium onion, minced (about 1 cup)

5 medium garlic cloves, minced or pressed through a garlic press (about 5 teaspoons)

2 teaspoons grated fresh ginger

1 teaspoon curry powder

2 pounds kale or collard greens, ribs removed, leaves chopped into 3-inch pieces and rinsed (about 24 loosely packed cups; see related step-by-step below)

1 cup low-sodium chicken broth

1 (14-ounce) can coconut milk

Table salt

1 tablespoon lime juice

Ground black pepper

cup toasted cashews

Before You Begin

*For best results, be sure your greens are fully cooked and tender in step 1 before moving on to step 2.

Instructions

1. Heat 2 tablespoons oil in Dutch oven over medium heat until shimmering. Add onion and cook, stirring frequently, until softened and beginning to brown, 4 to 5 minutes. Add garlic, ginger, and curry powder; cook until garlic is fragrant, about 1 minute. Add half of greens and stir until beginning to wilt, about 1 minute. Add remaining greens, broth, coconut milk, and ¼ teaspoon salt; quickly cover pot and reduce heat to medium-low. Cook, stirring occasionally, until greens are tender, 25 to 35 minutes for kale and 35 to 45 minutes for collards.

2. Remove lid and increase heat to medium-high. Cook, stirring occasionally, until most of liquid has evaporated (bottom of pot will be almost dry and greens will begin to sizzle), 8 to 12 minutes. Remove pot from heat; stir in lime juice and remaining tablespoon olive oil. Season with salt and pepper. Sprinkle greens with toasted cashews and serve.
