Bianca Knop (BHK 2001) Aims to Make a Big Post-Pandemic Comeback with Her Business

Bianca is a founder of Wildfire, a boutique agency that brings brands to life with experiential marketing events. It’s no secret that COVID-19 has had a drastic and severe impact on many industries, including the world of live events and experiential marketing. COVID-19 hit Wildfire almost immediately and resulted in a halt to their regular projects and client work.

"You could plan for the worst, but things will always happen. Watching an entire industry get shut down overnight is something I never thought I would witness working in experiential and events. Although frightening at first, I can confidently say that we are more resilient now and will face new challenges and difficulties with a stronger foothold."

Congratulations to KIN alum Sara Hodson and the Fitness Industry Council of Canada (FIC) for their successful lobby to attain COVID-19 support for the fitness industry. Gyms have re-opened in B.C., due in part to Sara's advocacy as president of FIC. It was through her hard work that they restarted on January 20th, 2022.

“There is no time like now to be active. Our work with the provincial government and Dr. Bonnie Henry’s office shows that staying away from fitness was a bigger risk than the risk that COVID-19 has within our walls,” said Hodson.

UBC Gateway Building Wins 2021 Canadian Architect
Award of Excellence

The Gateway Building, which co-locates Kinesiology, Nursing, Language Science, and UBC Health Clinics has been recognized with this award for a number of attributes including fundamental conversations with representatives of the Musqueam First Nation on the co-design of the building and an integral sustainability strategy.

The resulting contemporary design vision aligns the building with traditional Musqueam values. A skylit atrium is the social heart of the building that permits the atrium to feel like a dignified, warm place that is well resolved at the human scale. The use of wood and expressed timber structure reflects the Musqueam tradition of building and extends the ‘forest landscape’ experience into the interior. In keeping with the health and wellness focus of the schools that are co-located in the Gateway Building, the wood feature stair that winds through all atrium levels encourages physical activity as well as social interaction between different disciplines.
