Whether you’re enjoying a backyard fire, setting off fireworks, or navigating construction zones, a little planning goes a long way. Backyard fires are a great way to relax in the evening, but they need to follow specific safety guidelines to be permitted. Fireworks also require a permit to use or sell, and Open Air Fires—like brush or grass fires—must be approved in advance. On the roads, construction zones are common this time of year. Staying alert and patient helps protect both workers and drivers. A few simple precautions can help keep everyone safe, avoid fines, and ensure everyone enjoys the season responsibly. See the sidebar for quick reminders and links. | | Backyard Fire Pits & Fire Safety Reminders Thinking of lighting a fire in your yard? Backyard fire pits are allowed—but only if they follow the guidelines in Bylaw 839, 2012. That includes at least 3 metres of clearance, under 0.6 m high, and built with proper materials like brick or heavy-gauge metal. A mesh screen is also required to help contain sparks. Open Air Fires (like brush or grass fires) need a permit. Fireworks? Those require a permit too—both to use and to sell. Apply for a Fireworks Permit | Traffic Focus: Construction Zone Safety Roadwork season is here—please drive with extra care in construction zones. - Pay attention and don’t tailgate
- Merge early and follow signs
- Expect delays and leave early
- Obey flaggers and speed limits
- Stay calm and patient—crews are working to make your drive smoother and safer
