Global Travel Advisory

As of December 15, the Canadian Government has reintroduced a global travel advisory warning against non-essential travel due to the Omicron variant of COVID-19. With this update, UBC has made the decision to pause university travel outside of Canada for students while the global travel advisory is in place. This includes travel for co-op work terms, conferences and programs by OVPI Go Global like exchange and study abroad.

Per UBC's Student Safety Abroad Policy , any student planning academic travel to destinations with travel advisories of “avoid non-essential travel” or “avoid all travel” requires an exemption through the high-risk travel protocol managed by our Student Safety Abroad team. Our Safety Abroad team will continue to support graduate students with academically necessary research outside of Canada that can no longer be delayed to apply for exemption. Our Student Safety Abroad Manager reviews each application before forwarding it to a designated department head for final approval.

TI Methods Speaker Servies Webinar Wednesday, February 23rd from 12:00pm - 1:00pm

Please join us for the next TI Methods Speaker Series Webinar on "Harnessing the power of excess statistical significance"

About the topic: In this presentation, Tom Stanley will show how excess statistical significance (ESS) can improve the credibility of research synthesis. This will generalize on the notion of an excess of statistical significance by Ioannidis & Trikalinos’ (2007) that formed the basis for their chi-square test for publication bias by accommodating heterogeneity. This version of ESS leads to several new tests for publication selection bias (PSB) that are better than the alternatives as well as a new estimator of mean effect (WILS) that greatly reduces bias and MSE at virtually no cost to efficiency. These methods do not depend on the mechanism or the model of publication selection bias. The findings of these methods cannot be dismissed as a small-study effect because they do not treat small studies differently than large studies nor use, in any way, the correlation of effect size with its SE. Mathematically, PSB→E(ESS) > 0; hence, ESS serves as a good indicator of PSB.

About the speaker: Tom Stanley is Professor of Meta-Analysis at the School of Business and Law, Deakin University, Melbourne Australia. For over 30 years, Tom taught various economics and statistics classes at Hendrix College, as well as the odd history class (e.g., Western Intellectual Traditions). Since the 1980s, his research has focused on the development and application of meta-regression methods and the mitigation of publication bias. Prof. Stanley is the convener of MAER-Net (Meta-Analysis of Economics Research Network) and a member of both DeLMAR (Deakin Lab for the Meta-Analysis of Research) and the Society for Research Synthesis Methods. He is Associate Editor of the Journal of Economic Surveys and Research Synthesis Methods.

Canadian Student Health Research Forum (CSHRF)

The 2022 Canadian Student Health Research Forum (CSHRF) will take place during the week of June 13 – 17 (TBA if virtual or in-person). This forum is a valuable opportunity for health research trainees in all fields at the doctoral level (PhD and MD/PhD) from across Canada to present their work, to network and to be recognized for the excellence of their contributions. The forum will feature a judged oral (research poster) presentation, awards of excellence and opportunities for students to network around their research posters. A notable highlight will be the participation of Gairdner laureates, both as symposium speakers and for small group mentorship interactions with student participants.

CSHRF has secured support and resources to provide students who attend with complimentary registration to the Forum. Registration includes the (judged) oral poster presentation, National awards of excellence, access to the Career Development Workshop, Gairdner Symposium and small-group Gairdner mentorship sessions as well as the opportunity for students to network virtually.

UBC graduate programs in the health sciences are invited to nominate their top (5%) currently-enrolled PhD students to participate in this event.  If you are a PhD Student who would like to be considered for nomination please send your expression of interest to Heather Cheadle at heather.cheadle@pathology.ubc.ca by Monday, February 28th, 2022.

Value: Complementary registration to the Canadian Student Health Research Forum (CSHRF)

Student Recruitment

In September 2020 Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (G+PS) launched a new service for the advertisement of faculty, graduate student, and postdoc positions through their websites (for graduate students and postdocs), and, if relevant, external career portals.

All faculty and staff are able to post any open positions at https://faculty-staff.grad.ubc.ca/recruitment/job-ads . Student positions will be advertised on grad.ubc.ca in the project directory and embedded into the G+PS researcher profiles . Postdoc positions will be advertised in the Postdoc Career Opportunities website.

If opted for in the posting, all faculty, student and postdoc posts will also be shared with external portals via system-to-system integration, requiring no additional work. These portals are included:
