Take Action on Radon

Radon exposure is the leading cause of lung cancer after smoking, and accounts for an estimated 16 per cent of lung cancer deaths in Canada. It is a naturally occurring radioactive gas and known carcinogen created by the breakdown of uranium in the ground. Radon gas enters homes through cracks in the basement, sump pumps, floor drains, or any other opening where the house contacts the soil. The 2019-2020 radon study conducted in Hastings and Prince Edward Counties estimates about 15 per cent of area homes will have a high radon level.

It is easy to reduce risk from radon through testing and mitigation. Simple tests involve placing a long-term radon detector in the lowest lived-in level of a building for three months during the fall or winter.

Health-care providers can reduce the risk of radon related lung cancer by:

World COPD Day

November 20 is World COPD Day. Hastings and Prince Edward Counties (HPEC) residents are experiencing higher rates of hospitalization and deaths related to chronic disease compared to the rest of Ontario. HPEC respiratory illnesses (i.e., respiratory disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lower respiratory disease) hospitalizations are 1.4 to 1.8 times greater than Ontario as a whole.

Better Breathers is a peer support group offered by the Belleville Quinte West Community Health Centre for COPD patients, their families, and caregivers. It gives them an opportunity to ask questions, share their experience and learn from their peers. There are in-person options available in Belleville and Quinte West, as well as a virtual option.

The free virtual group meets the last Wednesday of the month from 11 a.m. to noon. For more information call 613-965-0698, ext. 117 or email theBetterBreathers@gmail.com
