Long weekend Parks and Recreation schedules and office closures

All Parks and Recreation facilities are closed on Monday, Aug. 7 for the BC Day holiday.

Lifeguards are on duty at Westwood Lake First Beach daily from Friday, Aug. 4 until Monday, Aug. 7, 11:30 am - 5:30 pm.

City Hall, the Service and Resource Centre and the Public Works Office will be closed on Aug. 7.

Ready for the weekend?

While you’re out enjoying the long weekend, take steps to reduce your risk of starting a wildfire and make sure you are prepared in the event of one: prepare your home, camp and recreate responsibly, make an emergency plan and make grab-and-go bags. Learn more on the Government of BC’s website.

In the event a wildfire spreads into Nanaimo, make sure you have the latest information on what you need to do by signing up Voyent Alert!, for the City’s emergency alert system.

Beban Pool reopens

Did you know? Beban Pool officially reopens today, July 31!

The annual maintenance for Beban Pool is complete! The pool and weight room are now open. One of the big projects completed was a brand new sauna. Workers put in updated waterproofing on all the surfaces, added enhanced lighting and new tile. In addition, the facility has been cleaned and freshened up. We look forward to seeing you soon! Did you know? There are four water parks in Nanaimo.

Each park is open 7 days a week from 9 am to 8 pm.

Dip in the Kin Pool

Enjoy a public swim at Nanaimo's outdoor Kin Pool, Monday through Friday, 1 pm - 3 pm, located in Bowen Park.

The Kin Pool offers full pool rentals on the weekends. During your rental you get exclusive access to the pool, use of the slide, diving board, and pool toys, as well as lifeguards to supervise your rental. Renting the pool is a fun, easy and affordable way to celebrate birthdays, graduations, family events, employee appreciations and more!

Will Your Commute Be Affected This Week?

Up-to-date information on City construction projects:

Midtown Water Supply and Midtown Gateway Projects:

  • East Wellington Road will be closed to all vehicle, pedestrian and cyclist traffic between Westwood Road to the east side of the Parkway overpass from Jul. 31 to Aug. 4. The closure will be in effect 24 hours per day, an alternate route is needed. Follow all signs and traffic control persons, who are there for your safety.
  • Labieux Road between the Kenworth Road roundabout and Beban Park Entrance, expect minor delays and traffic disturbances, pay close attention to signage and follow the directions of any flag persons on duty.
  • Beban Park main entrance off Labieux Road expect minor delays and traffic disturbances, pay close attention to signage and follow the directions of any flag persons on duty.
  • All main parking lots, facilities and park amenities within Beban Park are open during construction. Certain areas of the park are fenced off and closed to the public for safety reasons. Detours will be in place to access all amenities within the park.
  • The Public Parkway Trail Parking Lot at Westwood Road and East Wellington Road is closed to the public from Jul. 31 – Oct. 2023. The Parkway Trail is still accessible. The parking lot is closed for safety and will be part of the active construction site as a laydown area for the East Wellington construction work for the Midtown Water Supply project.
  • Commuters can expect minor delays along many streets in the City while construction crews work on this project. The construction will create visual distractions and minor delays for commuters while work is along the shoulder. Drivers, pay close attention to signage and construction traffic as workers and equipment enter and exit these sections of the project in particular Griffiths Road, end to Madsen Road and Northfield Road, Boxwood Road to the Parkway.

Terminal Avenue

  • Terminal Avenue upgrades will be ongoing between Commercial Street and Esplanade Street
  • Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction
  • Speed limit will be reduced as this will be an active construction zone
  • Obey all signs and traffic control persons

Fifth/Bruce Intersection Upgrade

  • Typical construction hours are Monday to Friday, 7 am to 5 pm.
  • Expect delays and account for extra time when navigating the area.
  • Obey all signs and traffic control persons.

Departure Bay Road Sanitary Sewer and Watermain Upgrades

  • Typical working hours are Monday to Friday 7 am to 5 pm. Traffic delays can be expected during working hours.
  • Single lane traffic on Departure Bay Road will be in place next to active construction.
  • Residents and businesses will be notified a minimum of 48 hours in advance of any scheduled impacts to services or driveway access.
  • If you live in the area and have young children, please advise them of the dangers of construction and be aware that heavy equipment and trucks have limited visibility.

Albert/Fourth Complete Streets and Utility Upgrade project:

  • Albert Street will be closed to all vehicle traffic between Pine and Kennedy Streets from Jun. 14 to Sep. 15.
  • Closure will be in effect 24 hours per day.
  • Please use an alternate route to avoid delays.
  • Obey all signs and traffic control persons, who are there for your safety.
  • Albert Street will remain open to cyclists and pedestrians during this time.
