Kin Alumni Newsletter May 20th 2019 | Volume VI | Dr. Cameron Mitchell on aging and muscle shrinkage Cameron brings with him a unique set of research interests. “I’m interested in how and why muscle grows and shrinks,” he says. “Everything from the molecular mechanisms as to why that happens to how we can use exercise and nutrition to help improve the performance of athletes or maintain physical function as people age.” Cameron’s main questions his current research addresses are: What are the mechanisms underpinning the age-related decline in muscle size and size, and what interventions can preserve muscle size and physical function during aging. More | | | Rachel Ramsden BKin 2013, MPH 2016 KIN Alumna aims to support safe and healthy physical activity opportunities for children through community programming and policy, aims to study the patterns of physical movement of children in outdoor play. More | | | | Marilyn Pomfret, Professor Emerita (1932 - 2019) It is with great sadness the School has learned that Emerita, Marilyn Pomfret passed away April 24th, 2019 at Vancouver General Hospital. Marilyn was an important member in the School’s community and will be profoundly missed. She will be remembered for her dedication to equality and cooperation, which opened many doors of opportunity for UBC's female athletes. Our deepest condolences to her husband Jack, and family. Brown, Professor Emeritus (1923 - 2019) The School is deeply saddened to learn that Dr. Stanley Brown passed away on March 13th, 2019 in Vancouver, BC. Stanley worked with UBC for 22 years, and was considered an innovator in exercise and exercise science. We send our heartfelt condolences to his wife Valerie, and family. More A Celebration of Stan’s life was held at the University Golf Club on Wednesday April 17th, 2019. On the same day, the BC, Musqueam, and UBC flags at the North Plaza of the Life Building (the Old SUB) were lowered in remembrance. | | | KIN Goes on the Road: North & West Vancouver On May 9th, 2019, the School of Kinesiology held the second leg of its KIN Goes on the Road Tour in West Vancouver, at the Ferry Building Gallery.
