Ontario Expanding Access to COVID-19 Antivirals

  • Effective immediately, the following higher-risk groups are eligible to be tested and assessed for antiviral treatments, such as Paxlovid, in Ontario:
    • Individuals aged 18 and over who are immunocompromised (have an immune system that is weakened by a health condition or medications);
    • Individuals aged 70 and over;
    • Individuals aged 60 and over with fewer than three vaccine doses; and
    • Individuals aged 18 and over with fewer than three vaccine doses and at least one risk condition (e.g., a chronic medical condition)
  • Anyone who is eligible for an assessment is now also eligible for a PCR test at any testing centre in Ontario.
  • A list of pharmacies that are dispensing Paxlovid is available at Ontario.ca/antivirals.
  • Individuals can access Ontario’s antiviral screener tool to help determine if they are at higher risk and should be assessed for treatment.
  • Fourth doses of the COVID-19 vaccine are now available to individuals aged 60 and over as well as First Nation, Inuit and Métis individuals and their non-Indigenous household members aged 18 and over 140 days after 3rd doses.
  • Eligible individuals will be able to book their fourth dose appointment through the COVID-19 vaccination portal or by calling the Provincial Vaccine Contact Centre at 1-833-943-3900, through Indigenous-led vaccination clinics, participating pharmacies, and participating primary care settings.
  • The Ontario government passed the Pandemic and Emergency Preparedness Act, 2022, a critical component of the province’s Plan to Stay Open. Among other measures, the legislation bolsters Ontario’s health workforce by recognizing foreign-credentialed workers and giving publicly-funded personal support workers (PSWs) and direct support workers (DSWs) a permanent raise.
  • The Personal Protective Equipment Supply and Production Act, 2022 (PPESPA) will impose requirements for the province to maintain a significant minimum level of critical goods, ready to be deployed to withstand the challenges of extraordinary events without having to rely on unstable foreign supply.
  • Further, the PPESPA includes provisions that would protect Ontario consumers by making it illegal to offer to sell or sell government-supplied PPE or CSE provided without charge or payment of a fee, with fines of up to $20,000 for individuals and up to $250,000 for corporations.
  • Through the Ontario Together Fund, the province is investing more than $1.9 million to help Bora Pharmaceutical Services invest in equipment that will help to grow local pharmaceutical manufacturing capacity.

Ontario Invests in Innovative Life Sciences Technologies to Strengthen Pandemic Supply Chain

  • The Ontario government is supporting an investment of more than $3.7 million by Toronto Research Chemicals (TRC) to develop a line for chemicals used in the development of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test kits, including those used for COVID-19 detection. The province is investing $2.5 million through the Ontario Together Fund to help scale up current production and fully develop TRC’s product line and other biochemicals. This will create 13 jobs in the Greater Toronto Area.
