FIRESMART BC | | City of Nanaimo Water Supply and Restrictions Confused about watering restrictions? You aren’t alone! When the days get summery, bright and dry, water quickly becomes a hot topic. The biggest point of confusion comes from the difference between City of Nanaimo versus Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) watering restrictions. The RDN has different water conservation needs and therefore has a different conservation and restriction framework. The City of Nanaimo has one abundant water source that feeds our community and it’s in good shape for the hot summer ahead. Nonetheless, using water responsibly is always important to keep it available for essential household use, fire protection, stream flows for fish and irrigation purposes. Our water is a shared resource. Thank you for doing your part! WATERING RESTRICTIONS | | Will Your Commute Be Affected This Week? Here’s a list of up-to-date information on City construction projects. Make sure to plan your commute and, if possible, plan an alternate route. When approaching construction zones, please make sure to slow down and obey all signage and traffic personnel instructions. Thank you for your patience! Midtown Water Supply Project - Friday, June 7, Bowen Road from Dufferin Crescent to East Wellington could have traffic disruptions during the day with traffic in both directions being reduced to one lane in each direction to accommodate the construction work starting at Bowen Road and Madsen Road.
- Construction continues on Crescent View Drive from Crescent View Drive to Boundary Avenue. Traffic will be reduced to single-lane-alternating during construction hours, typically 7 am to 7 pm. On Thursday June 6, Crescent View Drive will be closed in both directions with no thru access. Account for extra time in this area. Street parking is not permitted in the construction zone.
- The trail that connects VIU, the Black Diamond neighbourhood and Third Street is closed to the public. This area is an active construction site for the installation of the water supply main. Construction traffic will enter and exit the work zone at Third Street across from the Rotary Field House.
- Commuters can expect minor delays and visual distractions along many streets in the City while construction continues on this project. Drivers, pay close attention to signage and the construction traffic as they enter and exit these sections of the project:
- East Wellington, Westwood Road to Bowen Road
- Griffiths Road, end to Madsen Road
- Third Street across from the Rotary Fieldhouse
- College Drive, near the Parkway intersection
- Jingle Pot Road, near Black Diamond Drive

Midtown Gateway Phase 2B - The nightly construction and a full road closure on Northfield Road, between Bowen Road and Boxwood Road, was not completed last week as planned. As such, this closure and night work will remain in affect from 6 pm to 6 am nightly this Monday to Wednesday, June 5. Use detour or expect delays. Pedestrians and cyclists watch for a separate detour around the work zone. For your safety, please obey all signs and traffic control persons. Commuters are encouraged to avoid this area during this time if possible. All businesses remain open and accessible.
- There will be some recurring traffic disruptions on Bowen Road, between Rosstown Road and Northfield Road. Access to Beban Park and Beban Plaza may be affected at times, please use alternate access. All park amenities and programs, and all businesses, remain open and accessible.
- At times, Rosstown Road will be reduced to single lane alternating traffic between Bowen Road and Whitney Road.

- Terminal Avenue Northbound will be detoured down Crace Street and Front Street to accommodate paving continuing on May 27.
- The sidewalk in front of Vancouver Island Convention Centre along Terminal Avenue will be closed for concrete installation. Please cross using the crosswalks at Gordon Street and Commercial Street as a temporary walkway along Terminal is not available at this time.
- The mid-block crosswalk at Gordon Street has been temporarily reinstated without signals.
- Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction.

- Typical construction hours are Monday to Thursday, 7 am to 5 pm.
- Commuters are encouraged to avoid this area if possible. If that is not possible, expect delays and account for extra time when navigating the area.
- Detours will be instituted where possible.
Princess Street Area Utility Upgrades - Construction work is starting on Needham Street from Princess Street to Columbia Street.
- June 4 – 11: Needham Street will be closed to through-traffic between Princess Street and Columbia Street, from 7 am to 5 pm. Emergency services, local traffic and pedestrians will be accommodated.
- Other days, traffic will be reduced to single-lane-alternating. Expect delays and account for extra time when navigating the area.
- Typical construction hours are Monday to Friday, 7 am to 5 pm.
