Congratulations to all Spring 2021 Graduating Students!

Wednesday, June 2, 2021 | 9:30am PST Pre-show | 10:00am PST Ceremony | 11:00am PST Alumni UBC Celebration

UBC will host a virtual graduation ceremony for the Spring Class of 2021 on Wednesday, June 2nd. All students are invited. The event will kick off with a pre-show that you won't want to miss at 9:30am PST, with the actual ceremony start time at 10:00am PST, followed by an Alumni UBC virtual celebration. Grads and attendees will want to post to social media about the day. Check out the KIN website here to download and share special grad gifs, digital photo frames, and celebratory signage. Don't forget to tag @UBCKin and use hashtags #UBCKin2021  #UBCKinGrad2021  #UBCGrad2021

Have you had specific experiences where you realized you were not being represented or treated equally?

"Although I, thankfully, have not experienced instances where I was being treated unequally, I often found that people of Asian ethnicity were underrepresented in the sports I played... I felt isolated from other athletes and did not always feel that I belonged in my sports.”

Kick-off to the Summer 2021 Olympics in Tokyo!
Maria Gallo, Assistant Coach for the National Women’s Rugby Sevens

UBC KIN’s Maria Gallo is an Associate Professor of Teaching and the Director of the High Performance Coaching & Technical Leadership program. She is highly regarded both in the academic and National Women’s Rugby coaching circles. Maria was recently appointed the Assistant Coach for the National Women’s Rugby 7s team to help train the squad for the 2021 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. The team actually requested that Maria Gallo come on board to coach them, as many had worked with her on the National Women’s 15s and highly respected her as one of the few female rugby coaches in Canada.

Welcome, Dr. Erica Bennett, Assistant Professor in Health, Culture, and Inclusion to the UBC School of Kinesiology!

The School of Kinesiology is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Erica Bennett as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Bennett's program of research encompasses (in)activity and the aging body, the physical activity experiences of individuals living with chronic conditions and disabilities, and elite athlete stress, emotion and coping. She also collaborates with members of the LGBTQ2S+ community, older adults, and sport sector to design inclusive physical activity, health, and wellbeing programs.

Please welcome Dr. Bennett into her new role. She will begin on July 1, 2021.

 

Congratulations to Dr. Bill Sheel for being appointed as a Distinguished University Scholar! 

KIN professor, Dr. Bill Sheel, has been appointed as a Distinguished University Scholar at UBC for his innovative research examining the intersection of age, sex, and gender and the effects of exercise on human health. This appointment is made to a select group of ten exceptional University faculty who have distinguished themselves as scholars in research and/or teaching and learning. The designation is conferred by the President on the recommendation of a University adjudication panel. DUS awardees receive an annual salary stipend of $20,000 and a one-time research allowance of $20,000. Congratulations Dr. Bill Sheel on this outstanding career achievement! Read more here.

Psychology of Physical Activity, co-authored by Dr. Guy Faulkner

The positive benefits of physical activity for physical and mental health are now widely acknowledged, yet levels of physical inactivity continue to be a major concern throughout the world. Understanding the psychology of physical activity has therefore become an important issue for scientists, health professionals, and policy-makers alike as they address the challenge of behaviour change.

KIN Lecturer Emma McRudden on Nutrition, Sports and Ramadan

Emma McRudden is a faculty member in the School of Kinesiology and is the sports dietician for the Whitecaps soccer team. Emma was recently featured on CBC regarding her work with Whitecaps rookie, Kamron Habibullah, who is currently fasting for Ramadan during team practice. In the interview, McRudden speaks of her job keeping tabs on what Kamron can eat when he is permitted to break his fast, to ensure he is eating optimal foods for his calorie expenditure. Welcome Dr. Jan Hare, newly appointed Dean pro tem, Faculty of Education

Dr. Hare is an Anishaabe scholar from the M’Chigeeng First Nation. She's currently the Associate Dean, Indigenous Education, and the Director of the Indigenous Teacher Education Program. She's also a Professor in the Dept of Language and Literary Education and holds a Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Indigenous Pedagogy.

Graduate Research Day is an annual, student-led conference for graduate students to present their research. This year, the School of Kinesiology and School of Health and Exercise Sciences at UBCO will jointly host an online event over zoom, and directors Robert Boushel and Rob Shave will give the opening remarks. The aim of the conference is for students to develop presentation skills, receive valuable feedback on research projects, and network with fellow students and faculty in order to promote collaborations about the important research being done by the graduates in the School. All undergraduate students are welcome to attend.

Bodies of Knowledge (BOK) Conference

The annual Bodies of Knowledge 2021 (BOK) conference is being held virtually this year by the University of Toronto on May 20th and the 21st. It will highlight research and researchers whose frameworks, attitudes, and values are rooted in intersectionality and anti-racism in kinesiology, sport, and physical education. The conference is free to all graduate students who are interested in attending.

KIN Case Competition

In January 2021, the first UBC KIN Case Competition was organized and held by a group of BKin students, in partnership with local physiotherapy clinic, PhysioCollective. The competition allowed students to work together to analyze a Kinesiology-related business case and develop soft skills that will help them when they are seeking employment after graduation. On April 15, 2021, the Big Block awards gala went virtual so that Thunderbird student-athletes, coaches, staff, alumni, and fans could celebrate what has been a most unique and challenging year.

Congratulations go out to the many KIN students who took home Big Block Awards! Among the prizes awarded, three of the four outstanding awards were presented to Margaret Pham, Lief Olsen and Kendra Roberts (pictured above), for their outstanding qualities and achievements.
