| Safety capsule: This TSB report unfortunately reminds us of the dangers of flying at low altitude (TSB report A22Q0084) | On July 17, 2022, at approximately 3:30 p.m., the single-engine floatplane Bellanca 7GCBC (Citabria) (registration C-GOQZ, serial number 74174), under private registration, took off for a local flight under visual flight rules (VFR) from Trois-Rivières airport (CYRQ) (Quebec) to Shawinigan (Quebec). The pilot, alone on board, was making this flight in order to position his aircraft for the summer season on the Saint-Maurice River, near downtown Shawinigan. As the aircraft was not equipped with amphibious floats, the takeoff from CYRQ was carried out by towing it on a trailer pulled by a pick-up truck. Less than 1 hour after taking off, the aircraft was seen flying over the Saint-Maurice River from west to east in Shawinigan. Approximately 10 minutes later, the aircraft was again observed flying over the river at approximately the same location, but this time east to west and at low altitude until it collided with the wire lower part of a power transmission line which was at a height of approximately 20 m. Following the collision, the aircraft fell into the river in an inverted position. The pilot suffered fatal injuries.
