SEPTEMBER 2019

Back to the future!

Did you know that we have an exciting new branch of VIRL called The Creativity Commons? It is a space for innovation, creation and collaboration. Think of it as a community makerspace in your library where you can print books, design and print 3D models, record a podcast, record a music track, travel in virtual reality or hangout and play a game. You can use up-to-date computers to produce and edit digital content, print books, experiment with making and taking apart gadgets and pick up new tech skills! Some of the technology will be available to borrow throughout our system! Perfect to access for back to school projects. To find out more, click below.

Minimalism at its BEST

To introduce our September carousel of Minimalist books, we asked Tiffany Szigety Vancouver Island influencer and blogger from 'Orderly Lifestyle' why she is such a fan of the library. “I grew up using the library with my family, and now I take my boys. It’s a wonderful and inviting place on a sunny or rainy day, to find calm and let their imaginations run wild. As a more minimalist and budget-conscious family, we really love that we can enjoy a variety of books, without having to store them in our home or adding the expense of purchasing.”

G'Day from Bindoon!

Librarians visit libraries when they travel, true story. We were thrilled when Annie from Bindoon Library in Australia reached out and asked if we could connect for a visit while she was on Vancouver Island! We chatted all things Library while she was here AND she shared some hilarious tales from her Outback home branch! She even shares the hottest Aussie authors right now. The tale of a baby kangaroo rescue will make your day.

Quality of Life in Libraries

Growing up immersed in library life, Dylan Theissen says he took for granted how important his childhood library experience was. "I hadn't thought of libraries as a special place." Once he started pursuing his Master of Community Planning thesis, that evolved. He is assesing the role that libraries play in contributing to community completeness. In an increasingly digital world, we see the role of libraries as community centers at times undervalued.
