Parents or legal guardians can now register children age 5 to 11 for a COVID-19 vaccine. Photo Monitoring Project

Nanaimo is the first community in Canada to be part of a project to monitor environmental changes of restored habitats. We need your help submitting photos so a time-lapse video can be created. Visit the Green Initiatives tab on our website for a list of the park locations and to learn more about the Chronolog Service one-year trial project.

Aquatic Updates

Beban Pool: Due to unforeseen circumstances, Beban Pool's October 18 opening has been delayed. Please continue to check social media channels @cityofnanaimo and the website for a new opening date.

Nanaimo Aquatic Centre: October 23 & 24 a short course swim meet will be taking place. The pool is still open for public swimming, but pool space will be limited.

PUBLIC POOL DROP IN SCHEDULES

Board of Variance

Three volunteer at-large positions are available on the Board of Variance. The successful applicants will have a basic understanding of building and zoning regulations such as the City’s Zoning Bylaw and BC Building Code, as well as familiarity with interpreting architectural plans and documents.The term of office is three years, until December 2024 or as determined by Council.

Clean Catch Basins

As we head straight into the rainsy season, it is important we continue to keep catch basins clear, allowing rainfall to flow easily into storm drains. You can help by using a shovel or a rake to keep catch basins on your street clear of debris and avoid potential flooding.

International ShakeOut Day is always the third Thursday of October. While COVID-19 has brought many uncertainties and challenges, one thing's for sure: ShakeOut is still happening this year!

“Drop, Cover and Hold On.” Join more than 700,000 BriIsh Columbians as they practice this life saving technique during the Great BC ShakeOut at 10:21 am, October 21.

Pedestrian Safety

The City of Nanaimo, the Nanaimo RCMP, Community Policing and ICBC are teaming up to help educate the public about being aware at intersections and crosswalks. You can visit the pedestrian safety team between 11:45 - 1:15 pm on October 20, 2021 at the intersection of Bastion Street and Commercial Street. Pedestrians - be safe, be seen!

Will Your Commute Be Affected This Week?

Up-to-date information on City construction projects:

  • Ninth Street is closed between Bruce Avenue and Plecas Crescent. Detours will be in place and commuters are asked to plan their travel accordingly and account for extra time when navigating the area.
  • Metral Drive is still an active construction site, so please expect delays and account for extra time when navigating the area. All businesses remain open and accessible, but commuters are asked to use alternate routes whenever possible.
  • Hammond Bay Road (between Bonnie Drive and Overlook Drive) will be single-lane, alternating traffic 24 hours a day into November.
  • Watermain upgrades are underway on Laguna Way east of the intersection with Lost Lake Road. Commuters can expect minor delays.
  • Road patching is underway on Estevan Road from Poplar Street to Brechin Road. During construction hours from Monday to Friday this road will be closed to traffic with the exception of buses and local residents. Detours will be in place and commuters are asked to plan their travel accordingly and account for extra time when navigating the area.

The first Homelessness Action Week began in 2006 in British Columbia as a way to raise awareness about the causes of homelessness and engage the public, governments and institutions around finding solutions. Nanaimo City Council has been working on a number of fronts over the past year to address the long-term housing and the daily needs of unhoused and vulnerable residents.
