This Week...

A call to artists to participate in the Temporary Public Art program, register for fall recreation programs and congratulations to Olympic gold medal winner, Nanaimo’s own Ethan Katzberg. Read on for more!

Congratulations to Ethan Katzberg, Nanaimo's 2024 Olympic champion!

Nanaimo is a community made up of some truly incredible people, and every once in a while, one of our great citizens really puts Nanaimo’s name on the map. Last weekend, 22-year-old Ethan Katzberg won the gold medal in the men’s hammer throw at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, bringing a gold medal home to Canada and reminding folks around the world that Nanaimo is a city that’s known for much more than our famous dessert. We are proud to have been this champion’s first hammer-throw community. Did you know? Ethan was also chosen to be one of Canada's flag-bearers for the closing ceremony.

150 DID YOU KNOW?

Bowen Park has been a well-loved recreation site since 1855 but didn’t officially become a park until 1931. The park has seen many changes, but it has always remained a natural refuge for many in the heart of the city.

Alternative approval process for public works yard updates to begin in September

Nanaimo City Council passed three readings of the borrowing bylaw to replace the fleet building and the crew and administration building. The Public Works Yard Updates Borrowing Bylaw 2024 No. 7386 will now be sent to the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing for review and approval by the Inspector of Municipalities. If approved, the City will be able to begin an alternative approval process (AAP) to borrow up to $90 million for the project.

Once approved, the AAP is expected to begin on September 18, 2024 and run until 4.30 pm on October 31, 2024. More information on the AAP and the Public Works Yard Updates Project will be released in the coming weeks. To stay up to date, visit www.nanaimo.ca.
