Public Domain Occupancy: What You Need to Know

Do you know what the water property in the domain of the State is?

It refers to the beds and banks of watercourses in the province owned by the Government of Quebec, with land management under the Ministùre de l’Environnement, de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques, de la Faune et des Parcs (MELCCFP).

To find out whether a waterbed is public or private, you must contact the MELCCFP.

Any use of the State’s water domain, such as adding a dock, a boathouse, or mooring anchors, must be approved by the ministry.

Our Firefighters in Training!

Over the past few weeks, firefighters from the Brome Lake Fire Department conducted safety-critical ventilation drills.

These exercises allow firefighters to master techniques to control the spread of smoke and toxic gases during fires. Using ventilation methods, they can clear safe evacuation paths, improving working conditions during response operations.

Such regular training enhances the efficiency and response speed of firefighters, ensuring better community protection.

A First Responder Honoured!

In recognition of her dedication in handling critical situations, even off-duty, the Karen Brooks Trophy was awarded to Stéphanie CorbiÚre.

She also stood out by organizing events such as the annual Christmas party and the 20th anniversary celebration in 2023.

The Karen Brooks Trophy is awarded annually in memory of this dedicated Town of Brome Lake first responder who passed away in active service.

Winter: Leave No Traces on the Lake

The lake is a beautiful winter playground, but, just like in summer, your recreational activities can have a negative impact on water quality and ecosystems. Whether ice fishing or travelling on a frozen lake, it’s essential to follow certain principles to ensure you leave no trace behind:

  • Bring back all your waste, including fishing lines, bait and packaging.
  • To protect fish populations, respect minimum catch sizes and quotas. Keep fish you intend to release in the water as much as possible to prevent gills and eyes from freezing.
  • Avoid spilling chemicals on the ice and do not leave food scraps.
  • Use portable toilets and manage your organic waste at home.
  • If using a fishing hut, be sure to remove it before the ice melts.

For those travelling on the lake by ATV, snowmobile or vehicle, here are some rules to follow:

  • Ensure your vehicle is well maintained to reduce fuel leaks, polluting emissions, and noise.
  • Never spill hydrocarbons on the ice or in the water.

Your safety matters to us. Always check the thickness of the ice before venturing out.

Finally, inspect the site before leaving to ensure no traces are left behind. Together, let’s continue protecting Brome Lake!

One Step Closer to a Healthy Lake

On December 12, the Town of Brome Lake made further progress in implementing its Action Plan for a Healthy Lake.

Representatives from various municipalities and local organizations met to discuss priority actions for 2025. Stakeholders involved in water management for the Brome Lake watershed addressed current water quality issues and identified actionable steps to minimize the impact of activities on the territory.

The actions resulting from this meeting will be shared during winter.

The Action Plan for a Healthy Lake, adopted by the Town in 2022, is available here.

Of the 35 actions outlined in the plan, eight have already been completed, and 15 are underway.
