National AccessAbility Week

May 30-June 4 marks National AccessAbility week. In addition to an established committee, the City is actively working to remove barriers so individuals of all diverse-abilities have equitable access to choose the places they wish to live, work and play. In the video above, you'll learn about the newest pedestrian crosswalk technology being installed in Nanaimo.

Bike Park Open

The annual maintenance of the Steve Smith Bike Park is now complete. There have been a few minor changes to the course so be sure to check it out! Did you know? There is a mountain bike skills park beside the pump track, designed to help all levels of mountain bikers gain skills and confidence. Both bike parks can be found at Beban Park.

Invasive Plant Removal 

We are wrapping up Invasive Plant Removal Month with a work party at Linley Valley Park from 10 am - 2 pm on Saturday, June 4. It is free to participate. Equipment and training will be provided, however you do need to register using code #70920. Thank you for helping improve our environment's health!

Concerts in the Park

Don't miss the Concerts in the Park series this summer. The next one will take place June 1 at Harewood Centennial Park from 4:30-5:30 pm. This concert features Bandeira Parker playing Brazillian/Bossa Nova music.

Will Your Commute Be Affected This Week?

Up-to-date information on City construction projects:

  • Metral Drive is still under active construction, so please drive slowly, respect the new 3-way stops, and expect delays while navigating the construction zone. All businesses remain open and accessible.
  • Watermain upgrades are underway on Laguna Way east of the intersection with Lost Lake Road. Commuters can expect minor delays.
  • Nottingham Drive is closed between Hammond Bay Road and Cumberland Place. Commuters should plan to access Nottingham from the north end.
  • Utility upgrades are taking place on Cottleview Drive and Hillside Avenue between Caldwell Street and Pacific Edge Way. Commuters can expect minor delays.
  • Fourth Street between Bruce Avenue and Pine Street is closed in both directions to through traffic, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Hamilton Avenue at Pine Street will be closed to southbound right turning vehicles. Local traffic is permitted. All businesses remain open and accessible. Road closures will remain in effect until the Fourth Street Complete Street Phase 1 project is completed.
