Announcements :

Hello fellow PALM graduate students!

I hope you are all having a good start to the year, and are also taking some time for yourself, as I know the start of term can be a very stressful time for us all.

I wanted to share a few links for UBC wellness and health resources in case they may be helpful to you now or later on in the term.

You can all find info about UBC student wellbeing & crisis resources at students.ubc.ca/health .
However, I know the many resources available can be daunting, so the below links may be useful for narrowing down your search for specific resources.
  1. The “Finding health support” tool at students.ubc.ca/health
  2. Wellness Center Info Desk : UBC Life Building, or Zoom drop-in hours

Other Wellness Center Offerings:

  1. Indigenous, Black, and People of Color (IBPOC) Wellness Mentors - Trained UBC students will provide peer-based mentorship conversations in one-on-one and group settings that center IBPOC experiences of student health and wellbeing. The mentors will be available Monday-Thursday 11am-2pm for one-on-one and group mentoring conversations. Join them for Wellness & Chill every Wednesday from 4:30-6pm.
  2. Ask the Info Desk - Explore health and wellbeing resources with our Wellness Center Assistants. Students can drop by Wellness Center Info Desk to ask about the services and supports available for UBC students, email us , or drop-in virtually via the ZoomRoom Tuesday & Friday 9: 30-11am .
  3. Wellness Centre: Online - Self-Enroll on Canvas to learn about health-related resources and strategies for your wellbeing, as well as upcoming wellness events and services.
  4. Nurse on Campus Chat with a nurse from Student Health Services to answer health-related questions for free, no appointment required, four days a week.
  5. The Shop - Access safer, low-cost sex toys and sexual health products and learn more about sexual health with trained Peer Health Educators. The Shop will be open Monday-Wednesday 2-4pm and Friday 11am-4pm.
If anyone has any questions about these or other resources available for helping in student health, wellbeing, and success please feel free to email me anytime at mlauener@alumni.ubc.ca

Takecare,
Madeline

Global Travel Advisory

As of December 15, the Canadian Government has reintroduced a global travel advisory warning against non-essential travel due to the Omicron variant of COVID-19. With this update, UBC has made the decision to pause university travel outside of Canada for students while the global travel advisory is in place. This includes travel for co-op work terms, conferences and programs by OVPI Go Global like exchange and study abroad.

Per UBC's Student Safety Abroad Policy , any student planning academic travel to destinations with travel advisories of “avoid non-essential travel” or “avoid all travel” requires an exemption through the high-risk travel protocol managed by our Student Safety Abroad team. Our Safety Abroad team will continue to support graduate students with academically necessary research outside of Canada that can no longer be delayed to apply for exemption. Our Student Safety Abroad Manager reviews each application before forwarding it to a designated department head for final approval.

Student Recruitment

In September 2020 Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (G+PS) launched a new service for the advertisement of faculty, graduate student, and postdoc positions through their websites (for graduate students and postdocs), and, if relevant, external career portals.

All faculty and staff are able to post any open positions at https://faculty-staff.grad.ubc.ca/recruitment/job-ads . Student positions will be advertised on grad.ubc.ca in the project directory and embedded into the G+PS researcher profiles . Postdoc positions will be advertised in the Postdoc Career Opportunities website.

If opted for in the posting, all faculty, student and postdoc posts will also be shared with external portals via system-to-system integration, requiring no additional work. These portals are included:
