Local artist captures hard work of crews at Arrow Road & gifts painting to City

On March 31, 2022, local artist Karel Doruyter presented Mayor Leonard Krog and City of Nanaimo CAO Jake Rudolph with a new painting that celebrates the watermain and sanitary sewer work which is nearing completion on Arrow Road and Nottingham Drive. The painting, which depicts a scene of heavy machinery and City crew at work on location on Arrow Road, was presented in appreciation of the crew and project.

With any construction or upgrade project that disrupts a neighbourhood, City crews and contractors hired by the City try to be as accommodating to residents as possible, and allow residents to leave and return without much wait at any given time. It's a balancing act between speed and efficiency and respecting residents, their properties, and their daily come and go needs.

Public Works Super Fans

Super Fans Noah and Rosie keep a list of all sanitation trucks and their names! These siblings are well known fans of the public works team. Noah dressed up as a sanitation worker with a cardboard truck last Halloween and never misses an opportunity to wave and say hello to workers. Last week Brandon, Manager of Fleet Operations, came in on a day off to give them a personalized tour of the public works yard. We have a feeling they will be future public works employees! Thanks for making us smile Noah and Rosie.

Will Your Commute Be Affected This Week?

Up-to-date information on City construction projects:

  • Ninth Street is closed between Bruce Avenue and Plecas Crescent. Detours will be in place and commuters are asked to plan their travel accordingly and account for extra time when navigating the area.
  • Metral Drive is still an active construction site and Enterprise Way to Turner Road is now LOCAL TRAFFIC ONLY, so please detour on Highway 19a. If you live in the area or are visiting a business, drive slowly, respect the new 3-way stops, and please expect delays while navigating the construction zone.
  • Hammond Bay Road (between Bonnie Drive and Overlook Drive) will be single-lane, alternating traffic 24 hours a day.
  • Watermain upgrades are underway on Laguna Way east of the intersection with Lost Lake Road. Commuters can expect minor delays.
  • Nottingham Drive is closed between Hammond Bay Road and Cumberland Place. Commuters should plan to access Nottingham from the north end.
  • Fourth Street between Bruce Avenue and Pine Street is closed in both directions to through traffic, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Hamilton Avenue at Pine Street will be closed to southbound right turning vehicles. Local traffic is permitted. All businesses remain open and accessible.
