Spring has Sprung on Bowen!

The snow is gone, winter jackets and boots have been stored and summer plans are in the works! At BICR we are excited to see all our Spring programs blossoming and we encourage the community to come out to join in the fun! Try a new sport/program, return to an old favourite activity or spread the joy and bring a friend to show them how much fun can be had on our little island with a big heart, this April!

Join our Summer Team!

At BICR we strive every year to deliver the best summer programs possible and we are looking for people to join our BICR Team, to do so! We are very lucky on Bowen to have remarkable young people in our midst and we want to meet them! The summer staff will be spending quality time with some of Bowen’s youngest citizens being active, having fun and making wonderful memories. If you know a young person who would be great at this, please encourage them to apply before Friday, April 12th.

After-School Programs: Build New Skills and Explore New Interests

This Spring, thanks to successful grant bids to BCRPA, BICR is excited to offer five fun and affordable after-school programs for Bowen children. Drama in the Park with Jared Brown where performing and learning outside will be exciting, fun and different each session. Inspiring Art for 5 – 8 year olds with Tammy Brockmeyer will emphasize developing a love and sense of ability in creating art. Drawing the Wonders of Nature with Tracy McLachlan where 9 – 13 year olds will learn how to draw in stages and then create the illusion of a 3- dimensional form through shading techniques and detailing. The Power of Play with Ryley McLeod is back by popular demand for 5- 8 year olds and will focus on physical activity, sports and teamwork. Lastly, Lead like a Girl for 9 – 13 year old girls is a 8-week leadership program that will include some physical activity, opportunities for leading the group and a team-building exercise each week and is co-facilitated by Rebecca Lyne and Sheana Stevenson.

All of these programs are costed between $6 – 8.50 per session and run from 3:15 – 4:15 after school. Many thanks to BCRPA for their grant support that allows us to keep these programs affordable for users and continue to offer competitive wages to our facilitators, purchase equipment that honours our participants and cover all other expenses associated with these programs. Please register now as space is limited.

Spring Clean Your Activity Routine

With Spring officially here, many of us are starting to notice the some tasks that may need some attention. One of these could be your fitness routine that was deterred by baked goods, movie marathons and icy roads. The warmer weather and brighter days can be the perfect kick start to dust off both your sunhat and running shoes! Here are some ideas for bringing activity back into your routine this Spring.

Unplug: The TV and electronic devices may have been easy entertainment in the colder months, but now that there is light after dinner and sun on the weekends, getting your entertainment outdoors is easier than ever. Taking an after dinner walk, biking new trails or hitting the playground are all opportunities to stay active and have fun!

Choose A Project: Multitasking could be getting a whole new meaning this month as there may be a project or two that needs to be tackled. Painting, raking, gardening and many other projects are the perfect opportunity to get some work done and get moving.

Try a New Class: This Spring, Bowen Island Community Recreation is excited to offer a whole new season of classes. Try a new class or pick up where you left off with our various fitness offerings including Spin, Pilates, Tai Chi, Jazzercise and more. Sign up for Spring classes today at www.bowencommunityrecreation.com/registernow and look out for Summer registration which opens on April 15!

Bowen Island Community Centre - Your Questions Answered

You've had some great questions about the Community Centre and where you can find out more information.

We’re here to help, so here are some quick facts to help answer your queries:

  • Bowen Island Municipality submitted a grant application to the Investing in Canada Infrastructure program in January.
  • Our application met all the grant criteria and built a solid financial, economic, and social case for funding the Community Centre project.
  • At the time, we thought an elector approval process (aka a referendum) would need to be held in May for the grant application to remain eligible.
  • We’ve since clarified with the grant program office that we aren’t required to obtain elector approval to remain eligible for funding. This means we can wait until after we receive the results of the application which is expected to be announced around late Fall 2019.
