SQUAMISH HOUSING ACTION PLAN UPDATE

An update to the Zoning Bylaw to increase density standards across the District was adopted on June 18 by Council. These changes are necessary to align the District’s zoning requirements with new provincial legislation (BILL 44) as well as the District’s commitments to the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (Squamish Housing Action Plan).

The update has replaced selected RS-1, RS-1A, RS-2, RS-2A, RS-3, and RMH-2 zones with a new R-1 zone to include Multiple Dwelling Residential (MDR) as an allowed use.

Please contact the planning department if you are considering building Multiple Dwelling Residential units on your property at 604.815.5002 or planning@squamish.ca

ROAD PAINTING

The annual road painting refresh program is upcoming. The purpose of this program is to enhance driving safety, and work will be occurring in all Squamish neighbourhoods.

Road line painting will start as early as June 26, depending on your location.

All work expected to be completed by July 5.

The crew will be working at night to limit traffic impacts. Disruptions will include noise, traffic delays, and paint odours where the crew is working.

Please watch out for wet paint and crews working.

DUST ABATEMENT

There has been a dust control product crews recently applied along the Mamquam Forest Service Road in Squamish.

Like many household products, the product lignosulfonate is not harmful when used as intended, as a diluted product that is applied to a road surface.

  • This product is used widely across industry, and is considered one of the safest, most effective, and environmentally friendly dust control products available.
  • There is one more product application for the remainder of this year, in August 2024.

We thank the public for their patience as we progress this project.

BEAR ACTIVITY IN SQUAMISH ESTUARY & GARIBALDI HIGHLANDS/ESTATES

The public is being reminded to be aware and take precautions while in the Squamish Estuary following a sighting of a sow and three cubs Wednesday afternoon. No physical contact was made and no one was injured.

Please take precautions in case of wildlife encounters, including traveling in groups and carrying bear spray. People are urged to consider alternative areas to walk their dogs at this time.

The Conservation Officer Service has received multiple reports of a sow and two cubs in the University Heights neighbourhood, particularly around Snowberry Place and Squamish Valley Golf Course.

Continue to report wildlife sightings and encounters to the 24/7 Conservation Officer Service hotline at

WESTERN TOADLET MIGRATION SEASON

The western toadlet migration is about to begin. Tiny western toadlets are preparing to travel en masse from their Garibaldi Springs breeding ponds into the Garibaldi Highlands forests. During their two-week migration, they will cross most of the trails circled on the attached map. Their mass migration and sensitivity to disturbance makes our responsible use of trails critical to their survival. Please avoid use of these trails during this important phase of their lifecycle.

Western toads population is under threat from habitat loss and climate change. Help support our local western toad population by making alternative trail choices.
