This METAR describes the conditions at the Quebec City airport on November 6, 2018, 11:16 am local.

Did you have difficulty deciphering this METAR?

The image above shows us the conditions at CYQB at the time this METAR was published.

We cannot always have a photo or the image of a web cam to help us visualize the weather conditions at our destination. Not always easy. Fortunately, there is also the plain language METAR that Nav Canada makes available. For this METAR translated into clear language, click HERE.

A reminder that the Aeronautical Information Manual has a whole section on weather. Consult him if you have any doubts about your interpretation of this kind of message .

At any time, you can consult the Nav Canada site for local, regional or national weather conditions. For this link, click HERE.

Aviateurs.Québec invites you to participate in our next Jaser pour jaser evening scheduled for Tuesday, October 12, 2021 at 7:30 p.m. via Zoom.

This mini-conference will focus on winterizing your aircraft. Our guest speaker will be Patrick Desjardins and will talk about dos and don'ts and tricks of the trade,

Patrick has extensive experience as an AME and holds M1 and M2 licenses. He was responsible for maintenance and manager of flight operations at Sélect Aviation in Drummondville from 2013 to 2017. He is now training coordinator at AAR in Trois-Rivières.

Registration is free for Aviators.Québec members and $ 20 for non-members. To register for this virtual meeting, click HERE.

Aeronautical Information Circular 23/21: Decommissioning of the VHF Direction Finder

VHF Direction Finding (VDF) is equipment installed at a number of FSSs and control towers. This equipment operates on preselected Very High Frequency (VHF) communication frequencies, which are specified in the Canada Flight Supplement (CFS) for the aerodromes where the equipment is installed. The airport controller or flight service specialist responsible for VDF operations has access to the information in digital form, which gives him a visual indication of the bearing of the aircraft relative to the VDF.

Well, no more direction finders. NAV Canada announced in the aeronautical information circular 23/21 that this service will be terminated on October 7. This announcement affects 3 airports in Quebec:

  • Rouyn-Noranda (CYUY)
  • Val-d'Or (CYVO)
  • St-Honoré (CYRC)

How Airmedic Saved My Life: Safety in Remote Areas

I am saved. Finally, I am in good hands. I'm not going to die today. Martin | Airmedic member

I was alone at my cottage on a Sunday morning when I had a heart attack. I called Airmedic straight away. As soon as the dispatcher told me that the team was coming to pick me up, a heavy weight fell from my shoulders.

I bought my chalet 5 years ago at Lac Souris in the Monts Valin and I immediately joined Airmedic. I bought a satellite phone and knew that one day this protection would save my life.

Due to my heart attack, I could not drive and the arrival overland for help would have taken far too long. So the second I saw the helicopter, I knew I was going to be taken care of and was going to be okay with it. The medical staff are able to take care of the patients. They are equipped with the right equipment.

The Airmedic team quickly picked me up and I was transported to the Chicoutimi hospital. When I arrived at the hospital, everything was ready: the operating room, the doctors, the staff. They gave me excellent service.

Thanks to Airmedic, I am here to testify.

A big thank you to the whole team. I received incredible service and follow-up. The on-site medical staff even came to visit me in the hospital when I was recovering. Thanks again to all the employees who saved my life. I'm searching for words. It hits you when you realize it's a heart attack, that it can quickly end in a situation like this in a remote area.

I hope to never see you again in such a circumstance, but today I'm glad to see you and you share my story.

Report a Denial of Service from Nav Canada

Throughout the year, COPA receives information about one of the air traffic services (ATS) units in the country that has refused them service. In order to help resolve these issues, we need factual information with some specific details. We have created the tool below to help pilots report operational denial of service or service disruption by Nav Canada. We encourage pilots to report these incidents so that we can provide this information to Nav Canada on behalf of our members. Pilots can access the tool by clicking on the following link:

Correction - issue # 858, September 15

In our September 15 edition, we made a mistake in attributing credit to this photo. In fact it had been taken by Daniel Morissette and not Naor Cohen, as reported.

We apologize for this and pledge to be more rigorous in the future.
