A Year in Review

Despite the ongoing pandemic, Council continues to support, improve and strengthen our beautiful Harbour City. Learn about how Council’s vision for a community that is “livable, environmentally sustainable and full of opportunity for all generations and walks of life” came alive in 2021.

Holiday hours and closures

City offices and recreation centres will be closed or have reduced hours over the holidays. Please make sure to check the City website before you head out.

See you next year!

We are taking a break from My Nanaimo This Week next week, making this the last edition of 2021. We wish you a Happy New Year! May 2022 be healthy and filled with joy.

Check before you chuck

When cleaning up after all the excitement of the holidays, make sure to "Check Before You Chuck" things into your blue cart. Help reduce recycling contamination. Use the What Goes Where tool on the Nanaimo Recycles app available for download from the AppStore or GooglePlay or use it on the City website.

Winter Wonderland is Back!

After a hiatus in 2020, our Parks, Recreation and Culture department is ecstatic to bring back Winter Wonderland! Beginning December 24 and continuing December 26-30, Frank Crane Arena will be transformed into a magical snow globe wonderland filled with twinkling lights, seasonal music, a 30-foot Christmas tree and other holiday decor. Please check our website for more information and for a list of our generous sponsors.

Be in the Know if it Snows

The forecast is calling for some frosty and, dare we say, snowy conditions this week! We're ready for it! Our public works crews prepare the roads in anticipation of icy and snowy conditions. In the event of snow, plows are out on the roads in order of priority - emergency routes and major roads then secondary roads and then residential culs-de-sac and dead ends. Learn more on the Snow and Ice Control page on the City website.

Will Your Commute Be Affected This Week?

Up-to-date information on City construction projects:

  • Ninth Street is closed between Bruce Avenue and Plecas Crescent. Detours will be in place and commuters are asked to plan their travel accordingly and account for extra time when navigating the area.
  • Construction on Metral Drive has shut down for the holidays (Dec 18-Jan 2); however, it is still a construction site, so please slow down and navigate the area with care.
  • Hammond Bay Road (between Bonnie Drive and Overlook Drive) will be single-lane, alternating traffic 24 hours a day into November.
  • Watermain upgrades are underway on Laguna Way east of the intersection with Lost Lake Road. Commuters can expect minor delays.
  • Nottingham Drive is closed between Hammond Bay Road and Cumberland Place. Commuters should plan to access Nottingham from the north end.
