Aviation safety capsule: Go-around

You are on final approach, everything is going fine. But are you ready for a go-around?

In this video, the apprentice pilot does a go-around following a landing that was a little too hard for his liking. Fortunately, the conclusion is only crumpled sheet metal and a complete engine overhaul (ouch $$$). The pilot escaped with minor injuries.

What mistake (s) do you think he made?

We invite you to consult a short capsule which, we hope, will help you answer this question and refresh your memory on the procedure to follow.

Winter flying: unlike other seasons

With the snow well established in this cold January, the options for landing in the event of an engine failure are not the same as in summer.

Have you thought about snowmobile trails?

They are surfaced by heavy and wide machines and could offer a nice option in the event of engine failure, provided the track is straight and clear.

Take a few minutes to see which trails are in your flight sector by clicking HERE

We would like to point out that the use of a snowmobile trail is only in case of engine failure and to save a life and is in no way an incentive to land there outside of this situation.

The results of our quiz on stalls and spins?

Many of you took our quiz on stalls and spins. The results are very revealing in that stalls and spins remain poorly understood - whether it is the identification or the safe recovery from such situations. For a summary of the results of this quiz, click HERE

Why not make an appointment with a flight school near you for a flight to check your skills? It will be money well invested.

Jean-Marie Cossette: a pioneer of aerial photography in Quebec

It was in his early twenties, when he was a steel worker in Ontario, that Jean-Marie met a European who mentioned to him the important contribution of aerial photography during military operations during the Second World War.  Little by little, he bought an airplane and set up a series of aerial photography companies in Quebec and the United States. In 1974, he formed the holding Point Du Jour Aviation Limitée and established his first air base at Mascouche municipal airport.

The mission of the company is to photograph, at low altitude, rural areas, particularly farm houses and their buildings, village by village, and to sell these photographs to the farmer owners. The company operated in Canada and the United States. Point Du Jour Aviation Ltée's photographic archives are made up of nearly 4,000,000 aerial photographs which offer exceptional documentation and research possibilities in several fields and document the evolution of the occupation of Quebec territory over a period of close 50 years old.

The photographic archives of Point Du Jour Aviation Ltée have become the property of the National Archives of Quebec.

Jean-Marie Cossette was inducted into the Pantheon of Aviation and Space in 2014.

Renewal of category 4 medical certificates

A reminder on the procedure to follow.

Physical and mental fitness for a Category 4 medical certificate is established by completing Form No. 26-0297, Medical Declaration for Licenses and Permits Requiring a Category 4 Medical Standard. A reminder that to be able to take advantage of a category 4 medical certificate, you must not have any medical conditions that are listed on this form.

This document (26-0297) is available HERE

It is recommended that pilots submit a Category 4 medical certificate request by email to their appropriate regional service center whose email addresses can be found by clicking HERE . Medical reports should be sent to the regional service center and not to Civil Aviation Medicine to avoid unnecessary delays. Transport Canada undertakes to respond within 60 days of receiving the request.

The age of the applicant and the type of permit or license applied for determines the frequency of medical examinations necessary to meet physical and mental fitness requirements. The period of validity of a medical certificate is calculated from the first day of the month following the date of the medical examination or medical declaration.

We also learned from Transport Canada that the 90-day exemptions for logbook signatures will be extended in January 2022. So, no worries, your logbook is still valid even if you haven't received the logbook. label.
Likewise, those who have an expiring carnet, the exemptions will be renewed as well. Transport Canada is expected to rule on the new deadlines shortly.

Aviateurs.Québec Photo Contest 2021

The 2021 competition continues! It's the final round of the Aviateurs.Québec 2021 photo contest!

You have until Monday, January 17 to vote for your favorite photo from the December round AND any other photo submitted during the year 2021!
Vote HERE !

Yes there are few photos for the December round and there was no round in November… Unfortunately, some submissions were made to us by pilots whose membership status was not in good standing (renewal of membership not made) or photos were sent to us in very low resolution.

On the subject of photo resolution… most “smart” phones take photos in acceptable resolution and even “high” resolution. But often the email software used is set to send only low resolution previews. This can be corrected by the user ... You can also go through a manipulation by copying the photo and pasting it in the message. It is also possible to use WeTransfer, Apple MailDrop, Google Drive in Gmail or Microsoft OneDrive

In the meantime, go vote HERE !

NOTE: the contest will take a break in January 2022 and will come back to you for a round of voting in February.

You can now send us photos by writing to photos@aviateurs.quebec

IMPORTANT is:

  • Give the photo a TITLE
  • Give the full NAME of the PHOTOGRAPHER
  • Give YOUR full NAME
  • Provide your membership NUMBER (STANDING).

For the rest, we will consider that you have read and accepted the rules when you participate ...

The contest rules are HERE

The winning photos will be announced in the March / April 2022 issue of L'Aviateur magazine.
