February Safety & Enforcement Focus

This month’s focus from the Alberta Traffic Safety Calendar is distracted driving, winter driving, and fatigue. Our local enforcement priority in the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass is snow removal within the road right-of-way.

Safety Focus

Distracted Driving

  • Put the phone away—hands-free doesn’t mean risk-free.

  • Set your route and playlist before you drive.

  • If you must text or take a call, pull over safely.

Winter Driving

  • Slow down and leave extra space—stopping distances can triple on ice.

  • Clear all windows, mirrors, headlights, and tail lights.

  • Keep winter tires, a full washer fluid reservoir, and an emergency kit in your vehicle.

Driver Fatigue

  • Plan breaks on longer trips (every 2 hours or 160 km).

  • Swap drivers when possible; avoid late-night departures.

  • If you’re drowsy, don’t drive—rest first.

BYLAW FOCUS — Snow Removal

Thank you for helping keep roads and sidewalks safe this winter. Heavy snowfall can make removal challenging for everyone.

Please do:
• Keep snow from driveways, parking lots, and walkways on your property.
• If you have excess snow, arrange hauling to an approved dumping site—call 403-562-8833 for options.
• Keep hydrants and catch basins clear. Check in on neighbours who may need help.

Please don’t:
• Place or push snow into the road right-of-way. Snow piles can block signs, reduce visibility, and create ice after thaw/freeze cycles.

Enforcement
Our first step is education and voluntary compliance. When necessary, placing snow in the road right-of-way may be subject to a ticket, and Municipal removal costs (labour and equipment) may be invoiced to the property owner.

Logos of donors may be placed on the Crowsnest Cruisers van for donations of $5,000 or more to that service. Donors are also recognized on social media. We accept donations by cheque, cash, or e-transfer to peakstopinesresidents@gmail.com and sincerely appreciate your support!

Please check out our website at www.p2pra.ca. It includes information about our fundraising efforts, volunteer opportunities, an ‘In Memory’ page, list of donors, and much more!
