Sew Good Quilts

Welcome to Sew Good Quilts 2024! Thanks to all who participated last year; we donated more than 30 quilts. This year we’ll be making quilts for the refugee program at Unitarian Church Vancouver.

How can you help? There’s something for everyone; we need block makers, top and back assemblers, quilters, binders and labellers. This is a great way for you to expand your skills; try a block you’ve always wanted to sew, work in colours you’ve never used or learn to do a new type of binding. Team up with a friend or reach out to members in your area to make a group quilt.

Here are some guidelines:

  • The UCV has requested twin-sized quilts, as they are the most versatile.
We will make quilts that are 60" x 72"
  • Quilts are needed for all ages and genders.
  • Quilts can be modern or traditional.
  • UCV would prefer donations as they’re ready, instead of once a year.
  • Quilts must be able to go in washer and dryer.

Megan has a LOT of donated fabric. At this point, fabric is NOT needed. She has created several bundles of coordinating fabric that will be available at the April 15 for members to take away. You may also use your own 100% cotton fabric. If you can’t be at the meeting, email Megan to make other arrangements.

Feel free to use a new pattern or go with something tried and true. If you’re stuck for ideas, check out Pinterest. Here are a few that would work well:

April Block Lotto—HRT with a twist

Half RECTANGLE triangles are a common component of quilt patterns. Sewing lovely HRTs where the diagonal meets the corner when sewn into a block/quilt is a more complicated process than a simple half SQUARE triangle. Give this fun block a try and master another technique for your toolbox.

Please choose bright colours to make for a vibrant quilt when assembled.

Lily Ashbury wants to know…

Hello fellow quilters and fabric aficionados!

I’m Stephanie Carter from Lily Ashbury designs. I’m a Vancouver based fabric designer that shares your passion for quilting and everything fabric. I’m in the preliminary stages of exploring the potential for a new venture—a dedicated marketplace and community for quilters to buy, sell, swap fabrics, and foster connections. Before advancing further, I’m keen to understand if this aligns with your needs and interests.

Would you be willing to contribute your insights through a brief, 10 minute survey? Your feedback will be the key ingredient that helps shape this idea into a dynamic platform, perfectly crafted to enhance and celebrate your quilting adventures.

If you’d like to participate in the survey, please  click here
Survey closes Monday, April 15th

Token of appreciation
One participant will randomly be selected to receive a $50 gift card to Dressew.

NOTE: the initial survey form didn’t ask for your name (that has now been fixed). Anyone who filled out the form before March 15th is asked to email president@vancouvermodernquiltguild.ca indicating that you filled out the form and we will get your name added to the gift card draw.

Gütermann spools are handy!
