It's emergency preparedness month in Nanaimo, GoByBike continues and if you missed the Truth and Reconciliation presentation, you can watch it on Shaw. Read on for more!

Pedal to Places

The Pedal to Places Challenge is a self-guided, touch-free scavenger hunt that encourages people to explore awesome Nanaimo places on bikes, during GoByBike (Sept 27-Oct 10, 2021).

Riders are challenged to visit as many of the places on the map as they can for a chance to win local prizes!

Pack n Pedal

Until Oct 10, the community is being challenged to GoByBike and show what they pack around! Groceries, work supplies, recyclables, kids—if you’re packing it with your bike, the city wants to see! Take a picture of your bike and what you’re carrying, then upload to the Nanaimo GoByBike Event or email it to gobybike@nanaimo.ca.

Everyone who submits a photo will be entered to win a high security bike lock or a $50 gift card to a local bike shop!

Truth and Reconciliation

On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (September 30), Snuneymuxw First Nation, the City of Nanaimo and Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools jointly hosted the event: “Honouring our Children and Survivors on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation”. Thanks to Shaw Spotlight, this important event can be watched above or on repeat television broadcasts in Nanaimo and Parksville on channel 4 with basic cable and channel 15 on Shaw BlueCurve TV:

  • Tuesday, October 5 at 8 am
  • Thursday, October 7 at 6 pm
  • Saturday, October 9 at noon

Time to Winterize

Parks crews are starting to winterize irrigation systems, water parks and water fountains across the city. If you happen to see sprinklers or taps going off at random in some areas, this is to clear water lines and prepare for cold temperatures.This will be taking place over the month of October.

Emergency Preparedness Month

Beginning with Fire Prevention Week October 3-9, in partnership with the National Fire Protection Association, the City will help educate on this year's theme - learning the sights and sounds of fire safety. We encourage you to take a moment to watch the Fire Safety House video (above) with your family to familiarize yourselves with some of the sights and sounds experienced during a fire. 

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK OCT 3-9 

The week of October 10, residents can get ready for an emergency, such as an earthquake, by preparing an emergency kit, signing up for call alerts and creating an emergency plan.

PREPARE FOR AN EMERGENCY OCT 10-16

On Thursday, October 21, 2021 at 10:21 am, get ready to drop, cover and hold on! The Great ShakeOut BC earthquake drill will take place at 10:21 am. Residents can participate by registering at www.shakeoutbc.ca and then listening for the drill on 102.3 FM The Wave or 106.9 FM The Wolf radio stations.

Finally, the City of Nanaimo will send out a test alert on the Voyent Alert! system on October 28. Residents who haven't yet signed up to receive emergency alerts can do so today.

Get Vaccinated Covid Clinic changes on Vancouver Island

Message from Island Health

If you haven’t been vaccinated yet, or if it’s been more than 28 days since your first dose, get vaccinated at any community COVID-19 clinic in Island Health. Everyone born 2009 or earlier is welcome.

Appointments are available but not necessary. Walk-in to a clinic listed or make an appointment by calling 1-833-838-2323.

Keep in mind, COVID-19 clinic locations are changing in some communities across the island. Find up to date details on available clinics near you.

Will Your Commute Be Affected This Week?

Up-to-date information on City construction projects:

 

  • Metral Drive is still an active construction site, so please expect delays and account for extra time when navigating the area. All businesses remain open and accessible, but commuters are asked to use alternate routes whenever possible.
  • Road work and utility upgrades are underway on Lost Lake Road between Tanya Drive and Blue Jay Trail. Commuters can expect delays and are encouraged to use alternative routes whenever possible.
  • Drainage upgrades are underway on Estevan Road between Brechin Road and Drake Street. During construction hours from Monday to Thursdays this road will be closed to traffic with the exception of buses and local residents. Detours will be in place and commuters are asked to plan their travel accordingly and account for extra time when navigating the area.
